Revision (what little of it I am doing :P) is so tedious.

So: anyone else totally love Irish Drafts/Draughts?
Anyone got any and if so what are they like in terms of personality etc? : )

lol, meant to be doing chem revison here too.. not doingto good atm!
I like them, but personally I prefer a nice Irish Draft/TB cross, they just make fabby hunters, and nice allround horses generally

Lol tell me about it :S, when's your exam?
Hmm yeah I'm slightly torn between a full ID and the Irish sports horse, dunno, do you think the sports horses are better jumpers? I suppose they are...

I've got one!

He's an 11yo 16.2 (well, maybe a bit more) chestnut geding by Western Sun. I've had him from a 2yo.

Personality wise he's a bit "special". The most affectionate horse you could wish for, he's devoted to his people, will try his guts out, looks after his own & is very clever & quick to learn. A natural gentleman, if a dreadful flirt! He's also a dreadful worrier, doesn't like change, will try to dominate people & isn't at all tolerant of mistakes or unfairness. I can trust him with small kids but he soon puts know-it-alls in their place! People on the yard think he acts more like a giant dog than a horse. I love him to bits, he really is my horse of a lifetime.

To ride he's responsive (think telepathic) but needs a confident, tactful rider. Try to bully him & you'll be on the floor, show doubts & he'll take charge. Before his colic op he was a fantastic flatwork horse but far too hot & headstrong for me to enjoy jumping. Since his op & getting his ulcers treated we've just been plodding round the countryside trying to rebuild his confidence hacking. He's incredibly powerful & athletic but so comfortable you could ride him all day. He's also got the biggest buck I've ever tried to sit to often combined with launching up through the air just in case the buck alone doesn't send me into orbit - forunately this only ever happens if he's ridden in fields so it can be avoided!

A dreadfully underrated breed IMO, a good ID can do almost anything except race!

Mine's tomorrow, first thing in the morning :S Yours?
I think the sport horses have a more athletic style to them so henceforth preform better, due to confo etc.

By the way the purebreds are usually fantastic jumpers. Mine can clear the top of the wings (5') with very little effort but I don't like the speed, how far away he takes off & the way he completely ignores any rider when he's fixed on a fence. I also wouldn't mind jumping the fence rather than the jump plus a couple more feet!

Ha me too. I have to do an oral presentation tomorrow so I started making it 10 minutes ago....now am procrastinating

I do like ID, Although the ones I know are a bit too chunky for me...I think I prefer IDxTB or ISH myself. My friend had a pure ID and he was amazing though, would jump anything and very sweet personality.

Nari- he sounds lovely! That's one of the things I like about horses though- they have so much personality - they're like humans, without the drama (well most of the time!). I hope the op and ulcers are all better now. : ).

simplyhunting- Mines on Monday, but there's just so much to revise and I've already wasted 2 days (plus the whole of the Christmas holidays) not revising. Looks like it'll be a last minute cram for me too! :S. Hope it goes well though, good luck!

heather_bambi- See I think that's one of the things that appeals to me about the ID, I like feeling like I really have something under me, thought I suppose that's the case with some ID x TBs. I was on a pony (okay so not exactly a ID/TB lol) and it bolted off and I was terrified of stopping the thing for fear of pulling back to hard and toppling us both over. XD. Good luck with the presentation! To be fair though, sometimes some of the best work is done under pressure and late at night! :P.

I'm pleased to say my revision days are years behind me thankfully

Yes I'm an ID enthusiast, I've got a lovely 16hh RID mare (in siggy) that I've owned for 7 years. She's loving, fiesty, enjoys attention, isn't a buckle end ride although still sensible. She'll turn her hoof to anything asked of her, likes her creature comforts, always gives 100%, enjoys jumping and loves eating

The three RIDs I have know had the most lovely temperments, gentle, calm and intelligent and real triers and both could jump "top wings". Incredibly powerful and bouncy all of them. The mare was stunning.
Good potential for Dressage too.
I love them and am looking for another ATM.
They really have it all, grace, substance, trainability, prescence power, versatility and durability.
I wouldn't touch a warmblood or a TB if you paid me.

There is nothing to compare with a RID.

I've got to love them - I've got trillions! (Well - about 40 pure-breds and 20 x-breds to be slightly more accurate!

)

Wonderful temperaments and wonderful cheeky personalities!

I have got one, in my signature below

He's lovely though can be a bit of a thug. Very soft generally, quite cheeky (today he decided that in hand schooling was no fun but nipping me would be

), never forgets something once he's learnt it. He's stubborn so if he decides he doesn't want to do something, you've got a hell of a job convincing him! Hates people going into his stable so has to be tied up if you go in, even to change rugs, but is a lamb when he has headcollar on. He's definitely a one person horse.
