We've got a lovely manege that we've been maintaining regularly with a leveller, however while it flattens the surface it doesn't compact it enough and I'm finding that I need to level it almost daily (I exercise 4 horses on it a day)! The people that installed the manege said that I need a really heavy roller to compact it down and stop it moving around. Where can I find one of these without paying a fortune? It wasn't a cheap manege and was provided by the same people that work at HOYS and Belfast International so it's a good quality sand and fibre mix surface. I don't want another leveller version as ours does a really great job, I just need a roller. I have a 4x4 quad for towing. Any advice would be great!

It all depends on the quality of the and you have, you cannot rely on the sellers to supply good quality, several peeps have had to remove their sand as it wasn't what it should be....get it tested, can give you name & no. for this.....a good quality sand shud be able to compact well and NOT move !
Myself and hollyf have had this prob....both taken it all up... and got money back from sellers...I am getting fed up with peeps getting ripped off with 'equestrian sand' not being fit for equestrian use !
Were you given a data sheet or anything describing what the sand shud be like an advert etc?
Then if ness inform Trading Standards.

When i say it shudn't move i mean not in any great way, it shud compact, it doesn't sound to me like you have 'proper' eq sand I'm afraid.

I agree with V, it is the sand that makes the difference! You shouldn't need a roller. My arena has been down for over 6 months, it has 20 horses on it everyday and I level it just twice a week with a Logic Pro Grader!!!!! Because the sand is so good.

gosh! we've had it since june last year. I shall look out the papers from when we had it 'installed' and see what it says about the sand. Sounds like a real mission if that's the problem! Had no idea that could make such a difference. It is strange though, I've been at five livery yards before buying our own place and the previous places have been riding schools/competition centres/livery yards where LOADS of horses used the school every day n I don't remember them hardly ever levelling it!
