I need a rug for a cob I have got in that has a huge front end have tried several on as we have lot's of horses and most just will not do up around neck or across chest properly.

He is overweight a little but he is going to have a massive chest and neck anyway, so what is going to be the best rug before I start buying in more rugs that are not going to fit the huge beast, have never seen a chest like it.

Hiya Trinity Fox,

I have a very chunky mare - although she's not French she's the same sort of build as an Ardenne (though a little lighter), she is very broad with a chunky neck.

With her conformation the best fit of all the rugs (and I have tried many :() I have tried is the Horseware Ireland Amigo XL - I'm really happy with it. It does up around her front with no trouble at all, it's wonderfully deep so no exposed tummy and the fit just wraps around her curves (she's also a bit plumpy, this summer was a nightmare because the grass just didn't stop growing!). The only thing is that she has quite a short neck so the neck cover is long on her but it's plenty deep enough and does up easily. It's now into its second winter and is still looking good.

Although not quite as tailored to her shape as the XL, the other rug that I have that I like for my girl is a Fal Pro Chieftain, which also very generously cut and until I had seen the XL on her I was very happy with it.

I haven't found a Horseware XL stable rug and her summer fly sheet, also a standard fit, is a too snug (I bought the rain sheet that goes underneath it and haven't used it at all as it is just too tight across the shoulder and chest) so I am now looking at the Fal Pro stable rugs and would consider their fly sheet next summer because the standard fit of the turnout rug is so good.

Hope this helps - and if you find another make that fits your chap, please do let me know!

I have a cob cross with a wide chest and I have just bought her an Amigo Bravo, a size up from her usual size. I'm pleased with the fit and because the inside is slippy material it doesn't pull back on her chest. Amigo also do a chest expander for about £10 which I was going to get if the rug was tight on her.....useful to have the option if needed.

I have a chunky highland boy whom seems to have suddenly sprouted a huge chest in the last year.
Derby house can be dodgy but alot of there rugs fit my boy fabulous.
Cannot say enough about GFS, what a perfect fit and beautiful rug!
Mark todd's are more pricey but very nice and deep fitting.

Stay away from weatherbeeta, fal and bucas for sure I'd say on personal opinion.

Will look in to these, have a horseware rug not an xl though I think will have a look at these as have tried several brands I have to hand, and have to get him a rug, we were joking about his chest it is a long walk across it.:D

OP, the Horseware Amigo XL range is really good for the heavy types. Haven't found another that comes close to the fit that these have.

The weatherbeeta contour stable rug fits my huge shouldered cob, as does the Kool Koat summer sheet. Otherwise The Amigo XL is the only make that come s close.

Fal do a range with an extra three inches depth around the neck for the big horses which are pretty good.

Bucas, I agree, no good for anything with a deep neck or broad shoulder. However they are lovely on my finely built mare.

Oh will have a look at that too, I thought some of ours were big but this new one is mahoosive, it is going to be fun getting a saddle for him as the one they were using does not fit at all.
