Need advice footy after trimmer

Hi the last 3 times he been trimmed my horse has been footy after is this normal he goes great after that over stones ect but for those 2 weeks he feels every one trimmer just says basically tuff it needs to come off trims bars sometime frog and a lot of rasping

Sounds like your trimmer is taking too much off.

If his response is to say 'tuff', rather than to adjust his technique to suit your horse's feet, then it sounds as if you should be looking for a new farrier or trimmer.

Do you need to trim the feet? I used to do 30 mins per day on tarmac and he really self-trimmed, though I did rasp round the edges every two weeks when I examined them for evenness and rolled the edges, which was probably non essential.

I did have him trimmed three times when he was barefoot [four years], one farrier used to do a "pasture trim" and I could feel he was unlevel for about four days [he had a slight twist], the other farrier rasped more in synch with the natural balance, and he was level from day one.
He was never "footy" after trimming except when he had been neglected [not by me!] and I told the farrier to be fairly extreme as he would be only out in a field or in an arena for a week or so, and it was obvious he had been neglected, so the feet were unbalanced.
The bars need never be trimmed, as I understand it, and the frog is part of the whole barefoot business, so need not be touched, except to check for abnormalities.

Change your trimmer immediately is my advice. Shocking behaviour, possibly even criminal to sore horse routinely.

Argh! Disgraceful to have that attitude, it might need to come off in the trimmers head but the horse doesn't agree! Also, the horse will be growing it back as fast as he can ie. 2 weeks! How long does the trimmer expect to be stuck in this pointless cycle never mind the effect on the horse?

When I bought my boy he was 12 (now 14) and has never worn shoes. He was a bit footy after a trim once which resulted in me having a "meaningful" conversation with the farrier, who is a guy I've used for years on my previous (shod) horses. He now takes a lot less off. In fact, pony was trimmed last week and didn't have the backs trimmed at all due to my having done a fair amount of road work with his over recent weeks. I think you either need to find another trimmer or have a similar meaningful conversation with your current guy. Not good enough for this to happen repeatedly.

Wouldnt be touching my horse again after the first time with that attitude.

My farrier trims my old boys barefoot hooves and hes NEVER left him footy, even when he was shod. He always trotted him up before he left to make sure there were no issues and Im talking a stonking trot.

Get someone else out.
