Hi everyone

Recently I tried out two horses, I am an intermediate rider (walk, trot canter and small jumps), on the search for another horse (currently own 1 who is an older mare who'll be sticking around)

Horse A was a 7yo wb type, she does have an injury so she cannot do much jumping (up to 80ish?) but is unlikely to go lame from it, and if she were to go lame in the future, she possibly could be a broodmare, if we are able, as she has good breeding, nice condo, temperament etc. but I felt like I 'clicked' with her more than horse B and had super fun riding her. I didn't ride the best on her but did do things I wouldn't have thought I'd do on a horse I'm riding for the first time, she was similar to horses I usually ride and the only time I really struggled with her was over jumps as she tended to be lazy going in and hitting them or over jumping the tiny cross poles I did on her (wanted more I guess, definitely has the heart!), with her owner she jumped better. She is also a little expensive considering her injury (I've been recommended to try negotiate)

Horse B was a 5yo OTTB. Super cruisey type, being super fit. My coach, dad etc like this horse, I had doubts about him on the flat as he had big (but nice!) movements, totally different to what I'd ridden before. When jumping, he was amazing, super honest, point and shoot and was fine when I kept messing up jumping (strides and looking down). I definitely would need to learn to ride in a better way he likes for him and my coach said it'd be super rewarding to polish off. He could take me further than horse A but would be more difficult as I had to actually ride him. I messed up a lot more on him and he didn't mind too much, he is super eager to please and just a lovely horse.

I do really like B, and so does everyone around me and everyone I've talked to but I have doubts as he is a younger ottb, although he was too slow to race and very cruisey when riding, I would be getting support from him. Horse A would be better short-term (2-3 years), and she'd definitely be a more fun, casual horse rather than horse B who is more competitive, have to actually ride horse.

I'm currently very unsure, if B was an older horse then he'd definitely be a very quick, yes, but then I also wanna have fun, which I can do on my current horse, I suppose (my current horse goes lame a fair bit so she's just a chill occasional hack type)

I wouldn't want to buy a horse with a known injury, and in general I don't think breeding from mates who can't work anymore due to injury is a great idea.

But equally it sounds like you didn't really click with the second horse.

I'd suggest you keep looking, with the caveat that if your budget isn't huge then there will need to be some compromises.

I agree with previous posters, neither is the horse for you right now. It's worth continuing to look to find the horse that is just right. When you do find the right one, you'll know.

Don't listen too much to others' opinions. Choose a horse that feels safe and right to YOU. When I bought my first horse after a long break, I listened to my husband's opinion too much and ended up with a 16.3 hh ISH grade B show jumper (retired) because she was big and flashy, so appealed to HIM. I am only 5'3"! We managed alright, but it did limit what I could do with her - I was like a pea on a drum! I kept her till she was PTS at 23. I would have been much more suited to what I had intended to buy - a 15 hh native cross.

I think that in your position, I would look for a horse C.

IME, when you sit on the right one, you don't want to leave the yard without at least putting a deposit on them.

Completely this, if you're wondering if a horse is the right one then IME they're not.

Agreed, keep looking! Sounds like a 5yo Otto would be too young and inexperienced, and I would be very wary of the injury for the first one.
