Hi

I have a greyhound bitch she is about 4-5 yrs old I think. She has started leaking from her bum, now she is still perky and happy. I gently probed her tummy and she doesn't appear to be in any pain. She is weeing as normal and pooing. Not sure if this is linked but she did seem to be in season for a long time, but as I don't really know how long they are supposed to last wasn't sure whether it's normal or not

Any advice appreciated :) And yes will take her to the vet just wanted some opinions of what it could be first.

Thanks:)

Leaking what? Maybe her anal glands need doing? Is it really really stinky clear-ish fluid?

ETA has she been scooting her bottom along the floor? That is normally a sign their glands need relieving (until I got Henry onto a food that suited him, he used to scooch around and round in little circles, like a stinky dodgem car )

Are you sure its from her bum? If it was from her vulva I'd ask the vet about the chance of pyo, although I'm not sure of the time frame from season to pyo (some other more knowledgable people on here will know) When I asked my vet, he immediately started feeling her tummy and advised she'd be in pain when touched if it was pyo.

Otherwise yeah could be anal glands, yukkity!

Sorry had to go out. Not sure what she is leaking, doesn't smell like wee, but then doesn't smell really bad either. It looks like it's leaking from her lady garden. It's clear possibly cloudy as wasn't alot there at time most had soaked into her bed.

If it is leaking from her lady garden:D she could be incontinent, is she spayed?
Is she licking at herself and have u checked her bedding to see if it's wet or their are wet patches.

she has been licking herself quite alot. But she asks to go out in garden for a wee, so not sure. Yes bedding was very wet this morning (first time has happened). But it didn't smell like wee, but that was my first thought initially.
She's not spayed and hasn't been rubbing bum on ground either.

Vets ASAP.

It sounds like early stages of pyo and if not treated this can be fatal or require an emergency spay so get her in now.
has she been drinking a lot?

Agreed, on the fact it is pyo - the one thing my vet said was I did right to take her in asap and TBH I wish I'd done it even sooner because I felt great to hear it wasnt pyometra. Best luck x

Ok then, both incontinence and pyo would have her licking at herself alot, pyo can be odourless or fishy smelling and as suggested they tend to drink gallons more than they would, you def need to call the vet, even more so if her season was recent, pyo is a build up of puss in the uterus in bitches that are not neutered and it can be fatal if not treat asap.

I havnt seen her drink more than usual but we have other dogs as well, vets won't be open now. What is pyo (is it a womb infection?) ? Do they prescribe antibiotics? She seems well in herself so am abit confused. I did do a tummy exam and didn't seem to be any pain so?

Vets will be closed for routines but they will have any emergency clinic, they may advise she is seen tomorrow if they feel this is the start of a pyo or they may want her in to give her some anti b's and examine her, with a view to operating tomorrow or monday depending on how immediate the vets feels it is?
Pyo are rarely treat with Anit b's as a means of of cure and even if thats works there is a risk of another one brewing, so you definatey need to call the vet and speak to them and give all her symptoms, if it is a pyo she is at risk and there are varied symptoms depending how advanced it is, so it's imperative you call the vet.

Ps, alot of dogs will not show alarming syptoms, this is why there is a high rate of death with this condition, you have to be very vigilant to pick up some pyo symptoms, again, I stress, do call the vet and have a word.

Hi have just called their emergency number, although wasn't a vet who answered. He is getting a vet to call me as soon as possible.
Thank you for your help, why is it always the weekends!! She is turning out to be a very expensive dog, broke her leg a few years ago and cost over £1000 pounds then

Good good:), I have to confess the pyo wont be cheap, it's much cheaper to spay and avoid the problem altogether, I hope all is well and the vet may ask to see her in the normal clinic if he feels she is in the very early stages.

I also paid £1200 to fix my whips leg once, greys and whips, who would have them:rolleyes:........me obs:D

When Lil was about 4/5 months she broke her milk tooth out of her head. She screamed and screamed and my OH and I were almost in tears thnking she was going to die. Whizzed her up to the vets and paid the emergency fee etc (£70) to find the vet stifling a laugh...
She'd just lost her milk tooth and the sensation must've scared her. No death. Nolife - threatenning injury. Just a tooth!!

Still the best £70 I ever spent for piece of mind :D

Ok vet just called although would be more helpful if he spoke better english!!
Basically said to keep an eye on her over weekend if the bed wetting happens again to take a sample in to the vets, and possibly daisy on monday morning (so hard to understand him!)
He said could be incontinence, or pyo but to keep an eye on her.

Also keep an eye on water intake although without sitting there allday watching her will be abit tricky as we have other dogs, and if she wees alot more than normal.

I would section her off from the other dogs altogether so you can monitor the water intake, that part is very important.
Monitor her food intake also, if she goes off her food or eats less thats also a dign she is not well in herself.
Keep an eye out for her panting, this could mean her temperature is up.
If it is a pyo, your vet I would think is thinking early stages, hence the reason for you to observe, and the symptoms u give also do mimic incontinence, if however she begins to drink excessivly and she is passinf alot of discharge from her vulva then obs call them back, or if she becomes restless, I would keep her close to your for tonight and keep a close eye on her.

I believe the excessive water intake is the dogs attempt to flush the infection herself. I think in Pyo germs get into the womb while the vulva is open during the season. Then gets infected. (I hope thats right)

Ouch but not too ouch I guess. Have seperated her off now, and measured out a pint of water into bowl, see how long that lasts her. Also put a note up asking people not to let other dogs in with her.

She has just had a drink but still got some of the pint I gave her left. Still seems happy in herself and went out for a wee a minute ago. Also is spaying a bitch the same as a hysterectomy?

Most of pint is gone now so have put another pint in. Does that seem like an excessive amount?
It's the same, my sister had her dog spayed and said it cost £100 pounds was alittle while ago now but:confused: probably got it wrong though

Depends how much she has eaten today and if she eats dry food, msot of mine would drink a pint in one drink:D, monitor the amount of times she goes back to the bowl and is she laps continously when at the bowl in the space of an hour and how many times to have to refill, obs there is no reason to withhold, spay is alot cheaper than a pyo, there is a lot more to remove with a pyo and it's far more complicated, and alot of care has to be taken to prevent infection from leaky puss, it takes a heck of alot longer to operate on a pyo compared to a routine spay.

So what would they do to her if it is pyo? Will they spay her? can you just do that? or am I completely confused?
As in you mean if bitch was healthy then would be spayed but if she has pyo then it's different?
Sorry about all the questions I would be up all night with these thoughts in my head if I didn't get them out.
She hasn't had any food since breakfast. Just had her tea now. Will continue to monitor the best I can.
Thanks

Pyometra is just horrible for a bitch to have - I am ashamed to say I had a whippet with it, and never want to see it again! With my whippet she was pausing between mouthfuls when she was eating, no excessive drinking or discharge for her, so I had her into the vets ASAP and they operated the next day :(

If your greyhound has pyo then they will spay her, but the operation is more complicated because the uterus is contaminated with pus and infection so they need to remove all that too :o Hence more costly than a "straightforward" spay operation.

I would ring your vets again, or better still take her down there, and get a proper opinion from someone who speaks decent English :)
