Soo .. i have a rising 6 year old thoroughbred mare who only come out of racing in early 2010 and then was turned away to graze and now i have bought her. She's currently being ridden in a snaffle but getting rather strong now, especial in canter and after a jump it takes her awhile to slow herself down. so i was maybe thinking of putting her in a 3 ring gag or something like that so i can put it up and down depending on what shes like when riding? Ive got a flash on her at the moment but doesn't seem to be doing the trick so so maybe a grackle?

Please give your input i would be really greatfull.
Thanks
Louise

Very pretty. A couple of questions. Has she been reschooled from racing? Are you having any instruction with her? Have you thought to speaking to one of the charities that rehab racehorses for some advice?
I'd take the flash off and get some help before upping to a stronger bit.

Im currently re schooling her, using the side reins as i was instructed to on a ex race horse website to lunge her to slightly bring her head down so shes not got it up in the air. Hmm its pretty hard to say. shes biting on her bit alot, had her teeth done not long ago and going to get her back checked at the end of the month to be sure its not that.

No im not having lessons on her or anything like that, had a few ex racers but she is my youngest and biggest challenge. No i haven't contacted any rehab places i didn't know they really had any?

She kind of brings her head up when she gets strong

I haven't reschooled a racehorse, but my friend does. She told me that when you take up the reins they expect that they should run. When you release the reins that is a signal to slow down. So I can see room for some confusion here.

I have basically exactly the same horse as you!!! intially we used happy mouth straight bar 3 ring dutch which he loved, now do a lot in a myler a lot sem to like them if yoy want to spend the money... but so worth it!!! yes that or double reins pelham as you can just use bottom when wanted... also try a grackle the nose pressure makes ahuge difference when jumping and now lunging wiht side reins is making a difference(took a while for it to really impact thought so persevere!) sorry for length hope this helps! xxxx

Hiya thanks for the info if i got the pelham i think i would get the attachment so i havent got to carry 2 sets of reins as that would drive me mental. But yeah i was thinking of a grackle as they can be so helpfull/ Lydia do you have facebook? xx

yeah pm me and i will give you info... pelham roundings are great but can mean loads of unwanted pressure... best thing to do is change for jumping(or hacking if thats a prob too) so that your pony doesnt become immune or have too much if not needed all the time... the dutch gag is best also as long as hands are consistent gags are great... xxx

I have had 2 ex racehorses and also worked in racing, the magic bit I found that used to work on mine was a waterfood full cheek. As they could not grab onto it and run away with you! Jumping I always found gymnastic exercises the most useful as they could't just rush over them!! However mine never totally lost its huge jumping habit even at Novice level eventing!

Speaking from experience the reason your mare is strong in canter is because she isn't balanced. Racers are taught to go flat and as fast as they can as opposed to uphill. This means that when she lands after a jump or in canter she will be going on the forehand and finding it harder to stop herself hence why she is being strong. Best thing to do is get a few strides of a nice canter before she flattens then trot and build it up. My mare was exactily the same and by the end of it she was so soft you didn't need reins! I didn't changer her but I worked her through it.
It will come with time and muscle :)
