Need an answer NOW

You bought the horse without having it scanned at that point you took on this risk.
Get the horse scanned , the horse is extremely unlikely to be stolen it may have picked up a new identity along the way that happens too.
But get it sorted and if there's a problem meet it head on.
Perhaps I have just seen too much of what goes on but I would never ever part with money for a horse without having it scanned .

Is this for real?? Jaw has been slowly dropping reading this.

So basically, you suspect your horse may be stolen and you're asking on the forum if you have to have a microchip, as if the horse IS stolen you don't want it to be discovered. Correct??

Words fail me....

I smell a rat I'm afraid. Full of terrible spelling and can afford to buy a horse but not have it freeze-marked???

Schools must be breaking up earlier and earlier.

I've seen this from the other side, a friend put her horse on loan and the loanee sold it, it broke her heart.
After years of searching she did finally find him thanks to this forum.
Do the right thing and have the scan done.

I would imagine if he was a trotter it would be unlikely he would be chipped.

Actually it's been compulsory for trotters (and pacers) to be microchipped since c.1998 when they are registered with the Standardbred and Trotting Horse Association of Great Britain and Ireland. The majority of partbreds are microchipped in the same manner as a matter of course. Obviously I can't speak for trotters or pacers that aren't registered with STAGBI, but the majority do register with us as the appropriate breed society.

Microchipping is required not only for identification purposes but also for racing purposes.

So really, it is LIKELY that as a trotter, a horse would be chipped.

Under contract law it's under the Nemo Dat quod non habet rule. Basically You can't give what you ain't got. In this case a stolen horse would still be legally owned by the person it was stolen from irrespective to how many times he'd changed hands since.

this, simply.
if he's stolen he still belongs to the original owner.

Of course lots of people don't have them chipped, it is new technology, and to be honest if someone wants to steal a horse out of a field they won't bother about a chip, they might dig it out if they want to sell on, but again, presumably most criminals would rather take a quick profit, sell cheap, no vetting , cash sale etc etc.

it isnt easy to dig out a microchip. they're the size of a grain of sand (well, almost) and cant be felt for on the skin surface.

I think the replies are correct, but rather harsh. OP is obviously a child (her mum booked the vet) and if she's a child now and has had the horse a few years then clearly she was too young to be responsible for checking for a chip at time of purchase. Parents may not even know enough to have checked. So, as a child, you suddenly think "what if my pony belongs to someone else and I have to give him up" of course she's panicking and thinking like this! Heck as an adult I'd be stressed to bits. OP, the only way of stopping the worry is to get the vet to scan, no good worrying without good reason. See what is found and then go from there- take it as it comes. Also if you get him chipped or find out his number he's safer in future if you were to have him stolen. Good luck
