Jade; I know you will be feeling particularly fragile right now - I know I was when the exact same thing happened to my little Arab last year.
Please try to remain positive though. My little Arab's prognosis was that she would likely die, if not from shock, then possibly from cut-off blood circulation as a result of her injuries. Well she did survive - yes it took months and months for the injuries to repair themselves. She has been left with scarring BUT she is totally sound and none the worse for wear now.
I have my fingers firmly crossed for Tex and I really hope he pulls through this.
Thank you su much everyone. I am in tears right now I am so touched.
I have just come in from being with him. He is up and eating. He is drinking ALOT as well. He (believe it or not ) seems fine in himself in spite fo the pain. Terrible hopping limp though.
Vet said no Butte for a few days because he wants him to feel the pain to avoid rip out and overuse
The other boys are seperated from him but right next to him. They are lingering very close because they know something is wrong. My first thought was to keep him in a stall, but vet said no. He said what he needed was a clean dry outdoor space by his friends with room to walk. He said he needs to move freely to promote the bloodflow to the injury. He missed a main vein by not even a hair! He is very lucky for this.
The vet is quite positive though that he has damaged part of his hoof that promotes new growth. He said he will most likely never grow new hoof in that spot again but it may not affect his soundness or riding IF we get him through this. He will just have 3/4 of a hoof and need corrective trims .
He will never by the same though I suspect.
The vet was trying his best to be positive, but was quite realistic that we just "hope for the best"
I was in no mood for details last night as it was quite greusome, but truth be told he came close to instant death! He has been cut about half way across at an angle and a massive piece of flesh was hanging exposing bone, flesh and tendons
At this point I just want him to get through right now. I will deal with the future as it comes.
I will keep you all posted
and please please please watch your horses around wire! Having electric up to keep them off it obviously is not good enough protection!
I have just found this Jade. What a terrible thing, both for you to find and cope with and for poor Tex. I do hope that he will heal and mend. I am sure you will do all you can to help him. Big hugs and vibes to both of you.
