I thought Cavalesse contained Nicotinimide? I have bought a Newmarket supplement of Nicotinimide via my vet's for my mare and this was definately cheaper than the Cavalesse.

You want sulphur tablets or rock sulphur in the water. It 'cools'. Its well known for clearing up skin conditions particularly itchy ones. I would suggest feeding in the dinner at a high rate to begin with and then placing a lump of rock sulphur in the water bucket to maintain things.

My dog always used to itch herself red raw all over... just like mange but wasnt, she used to have to go off to the vets for steroid injections and antibiotics to try and calm it all down, I was reccomended sulphur and have never looked back, she has been completely clear for a couple of years now, when in the past it used to be a constant battle.

I can pretty much guarentee it will work. If you google it it is widely used for such purposes.

Don't have much to add, other than could it possibly be a reaction to alfa, as many can be sensitive to it.
Possibly try cutting out the hi-fi lite as this does contain alfa.

Hope the owners sort something out soon.
 
Just a little update :) 6 weeks down the line, horse is on cooking salt, sweet itch tablets once a week, and herbal supplement he is a completely different horse. Completely shiny, no scurf, full coat and no itchiness :D
 
How fab! :) I'd be wary of the sweet itch tablets (begins with a b?) after a talk from the RVC where we were basically told they don't work! Is he still in a fly rug? And was it because of the salt advice on here that he was put on it? How are you delivering the salt and how much does he get?

Nicotinamide is vitamin B3 which is in brewers yeast.

The bioeos tables have worked well for one of ours.

So it looks like it was a deficiency?

How did you treat him?
Did you start everything being added at once?
 
All those questions I can't answer - just informed owner and let her get on with it. I know tablet is once a week, salt is two spoons a day and still wears his boett rug 24/7
 
Fab update , so pleased for the horse and owner of course. Well done you for taking the trouble to research I am sure the horse is grateful :)
