my horse pilgrim is an ex racehorse and becomes very difficult to handle when i take him out on a hack regardless if he is on his own or with other horses. He will generally rear up ,usually a half rear but has gone to full height before, and then spin round and canter down the road. I know he is just napping because he always does it in particular spots. Also i have tried leadign him out by hand and he was absolutley fine:mad:!!he is generally worse coming back home, and he also doesn't like to stand still at junctions which results with us jumping into the middle of the road regardless of traffic, desperate for some help as he is actually becoming quite unmanageable and is starting to knock confidence, he is an absolute dream in all other areas besides this so hes not all bad:D any advice or people who have had to deal with similar situations are all welcome, just really need some help!!:D thanks :D

Can you get him to stand still until you tell him otherwise in non dangerous situations?

I would start by despooking him in the school or safe place and get him going past things in a controlled environment an working on his general manners ie stand still etc. hopefully that would then transfer to less controlled situations. I wouldn't take him on the road until you have done that and he is behaving properly in those situations.

yeah he stands still fine in the school and is really well behaved in the stable, i think because he's having to wait in a more open space it must trigger something in his head in relation to his racing days, i will try that then thankyou for your advice :)

If he's fine in-hand and you can get back on easily, I would dismount if he's becoming dangerous (and leaping towards traffic certainly is). Then lead him to a safe spot to remount and then carry on with your ride.

is he just excited or really spooky - have you tried hacking him when he is tired after schooling for example ? if he is always doing it in the same place I would be concerned that it was becoming a habit which may be difficult to change.
Does he only do it with you or everyone ?

If he gets dangerous i would recomend you get off at once its safer for you, other road users and your horse! after that bit get back on quietly and give him a pat, if he keeps doing it you could send him to Hurstwood Farm Equestrian centre (if you want, they are really good!:) )they break in and solved problemed horses check ou their website for more details:)

Is he better with one quiet horse? Or with someone on foot or on a bike? Or if you lunge first to take the edge off?

You need to make sure you stay safe! My racer is 100% with another horse & v doubtful & flighty following a bike, so we only hack in company. For me, it's not worth the risk of having an accident by insisting he hacks alone when he isn't safe.

i think it is just general excitement i have tried schooling him before taking him out i have also alternated which way i go, i will have to try the dismounting option which will hopefully let him settle down before I proceed again, thanks for the advice guys!!:)
