My mare has bad balance in the canter on the right rein, she goes disunited a lot and can have trouble getting the correct lead. Also she falls in through her right shoulder whilst in the canter. Her transition into the canter is good and she doesn't have this problem on the other rein, just wondering what to do to help her!

If she cant get the right lead then the transiitions to canter are not actulay good - she might be listening to your leg but this doesnt make for a good transition.

Couldnt be that she doesnt have co-ordination on this rein yet, lack of strength/muscle on this side, bad saddle, unbalanced rider.

Can she canter on the right lead on the lunge? if not go back a few steps and get this right without a rider on her back. This will also help for muscle and balance

Can she jump? If so try trotting into a very small x pole and ask for right lead over the fence.

Lots of transitions on the right lead, lots of bending/suppling work

you can also try taking the weight from her back completely when you ask for canter.

yeah she does well on the lunge, I've been doing quite a bit of work on it in order to help with the situation but she seems more comfortable cantering on the lunge as opposed to when she's being ridden.
thanks for the reply :)

In that case she is either unbalanced with a rider or is misunderstanding the aids for the right lead and just going into canter - have you tried being lunged? does she strike off correctly then or not?

My gelding is exactly like this, we've just started canter worked.
I agree with taking the weight of her back when asking, this is exactly what my riding instructor advised. Go into cross country position just before asking it worked for my gelding, once he established going on the correct lead I went to sitting and asking which sometimes he does still go off the wrong leg, try turning then asking for canter straight away this also helped me. Just takes plenty of practice :)
