Hi all,

Its the first time i have posted in here so please be nice :D.. me and my other half have just bought our first dog (yep we made a mistake doing for a pup but it was one of those im not leaving him here in this state moments) hes turned out to be the most lovely tempered dog ever you could literally swing that dog round by his tail and he wouldnt do anything (no i dont do this) he has learnt to sit and is well on the way to learning wait however i am really struggling with him on walks, he will go off the lead and comes back when he thinks "oh *****e i cant see them" he is friendly with other dogs but will go running over to them and again comes back when he realizes we arnt there and then goes running back again he also chases bikes and would no doubt go after a skate board. I am currently teaching him to loose lead walk and its taking a lot of patience but we are slowly getting there. I feel i fail him sometimes as he shouldnt run after bikes but i really dont know how ton stop him obviously i need to teach him to recall better (he will come if there are no other distractions) I always give him treats when he comes back but as soon as he sees something he wants hes off :( x

There will be plenty of people on here that will give you much better advise then me, however I would suggest that he does not go off lead until you have recall sorted, buy a long line and work with him on that until he learns recall properly!

What age is he? If you are using food as a reward, only train when he is hungry, if he has had his brekkie or his tea, he is not going to work for his food and he has to learn that the food comes from you and only for good behaviour, not plonked down in a bowl at the same time every day.

I'd get the OH or a friend on a bike and just spend a few days proofing him against bikes.

I don't know how old he is (wait til 12-18mths for actual exercise off a bike) but my dog has a high prey drive and I run him off a bike, as a result he does not bat an eyelid at other bikes, joggers etc and it keeps him occupied enough not to bother with other dogs.

Hi

Thanks for the replies :) hes 10 months, ive suggested to my other half that if one of us waqlks him and other one rides a bike next to him that may help? :0 hes obsessed with anything that moves he stands there on sunny days chasing his collar tag that reflects on the floor and walls :S i dont think hes wired up right haha  x

Bit young for biking him properly but not too young to get him to walk beside a bike nicely.
Or just spend a lot of time with someone riding a bike past him and the less he reacts, the higher the reward, it does take time though.

What breed is he? Sounds like he needs a lot more mental stimulation/a job when he is older.

As Hedwards says, only let him off in secure areas, like I say I bike my dog and it is irritating when other dogs bounce up to us. He's not aggressive (can be an arse :p), but who's to know that?

i wouldnt dare allow him off anywhere where there was a road near we are lucky to live near nature reserves that people use for dog walking mainly. hes patterdale x jack russell we believe :) the problem hes had is we bought him at 5 months and he hadnt had any jabs or even been out of the room he was in so he never had any socializing until we got him :( x

What she says ^^ :D

He needs mentally tiring out as well as physically so maybe train him for an hour or so at home: new tricks, seeking treats hidden round the house/garden. Take him everywhere to stimulate and make him mentally tired and only feed him when he's being walked (bit icky if you feed wet!) so he's hungry and motivated.

we had him ah herm "chopped" just over a month ago and have noticed he is alot quieter just has selective hearing :( my friend does fly ball and i am debating starting there with him but i dont know whether he would just run off and annoy all the other competitors, we also have agility near us and i can wait to start there hes got a fab jump on him (dont worry i dont make him jump too big as i know hes too young for that) x
