Basically I have a loan horse and the owners told me he wont jump over coloured poles becausehe got abused by them because the previous owners used to throw them at him or something, so he bolts right after them or he just wont go over.

So my instructor and I got him over just poles on the ground but he kept bolting everytime, apparently he will go on a cross country course with natural fences but thats it.

I just want to try and help him because he used to be a showjumping horse, so if anyone could help it or give any advice it would help loads :D

Thanks x

what i would properly do is place the poles all over the yard so he gets used to seeing them around and maybe put a jump up in his field so he can go over and sniff and look at it school him loads with a course of jumps up but dont ask him to go over and until he is fully comfortable with them around and then start with basic agian doing pole work combined in with your flatwork and gradually build it up :)

Okay cool thanks :) only problem is when people go on him for lessons they say he wont even trot past the poles even tho when I go on him he does which is a bit strange, but I dont know what hes like when they have a lesson on him because I'm not there to watch

Is there an arena you can use where you can put some poles on the ground and turn him loose for a while? then he should mooch around and sniff them as he pleases and this could be a start :)

Did just notice it said loan horse so maybe respect the owners wishes too and not push too much

What I would do is listen to the owner, and keep yourself and the horse safe.

+1

Have you told the owner what you're doing?
If you truly want to help him, understand that each time he sees them he's terrified and don't force it. If you want a horse to show jump, get a horse that show jumps

The owner said I was allowed because she never had the time to try and do it, btw the owner runs the yard

Okay, you never explained that in the OP :D. How old is he? Something extremely bad must have happened to go from being a showjumper to being terrified of coloured poles. sounds like more than having them thrown at him, etc. Poor boy :(

If you have been told that this horse 'bolts' after jumping a coloured pole - but also encouraged to give it a go (and are happy to do so) please make sure you have taken out some sort of private medical care and perhaps life insurance so that we don't have to pay for your medical care when you are seriously hurt - and so that your family has some money to pay for your funeral expenses should the worst happen.

Also tell your family that they will probably be able to also sue quite successfully the idiot (sorry owner) for so carelessly encouraging you to recklessly endanger your life should you be killed.
