Ok my mare is very funny and has a very soft mouth - ive always worn a flash with her as she easily gets her tongue over the bit !!

But this really annoys her and i cant do it up till before i get on her which she then proceeds to chomp on the bit (which is really annoying)

Does anyone have any ideas ??

I dont think in dressage im allowed to use a snaffle with a tongue port am i ??

xxx

no, you cant use a tongue port in dressage......

Whats she like with just a loose cavesson? is it perhaps the flash thats making her chew?

oh bum i knew you were going to say that !!!

she is fine in a loose cavesson hun but then she gets her tongue over the bit when she wants to evade something im asking her to do ??xx

hmmmmmmm not sure then!! Could you perhaps just school her in one bit (ie a high port one) then do your dressage tests in a BD legal one? Thats what i do, i use a myler for schooling and swap into a KK to compete - he goes much better like this

hmmm im guessing i could try !! she is so damn clever though im sure she will know !!

Tempi, out of interest do you have your lesson's using your schooling bridle or your competition bridle? Only asking because I know someone that does similar

Try putting the bit up a hole on the bridle as that makes it harder for them to get the tongue over the bit, then swap the noseband to a crankback caverson as this won't annoy the horse so much but will stop her having as much movement through her jaw - again makes it harder to sneak her tongue over the bit.

unfortunately ive done this already - she has an amazing tongue and dont dare to put it any higher - she has a crank noseband x

I would try a high ported Myler for schooling with a loose caverson, and then put her in a BD legal bit for competitions.

oh got any ideas of which myler would be good for her ?? xx

i'd put a drop noseband on her, as long as it's fitted correctly it doesn't need to be tight to be effective.
horses need to be able to chew and swallow when doing dressage, so i am very against tight nosebands.
a myler full-cheek with keepers (for absolute stability of the bit), either an 02 or a mullen mouthpiece, with the drop noseband, is what i'd try.

eeek your confusing me now !!!

whats the difference between an 02 and a mullen mouthpiece ??

umm, unless i'm getting confused, the 02 is the wide-barrel comfort snaffle, and the mullen has a different code, 32. both are dressage legal, as long as they're without hooks. the mullen hardly moves at all, whereas the other one flexes a bit. i've got a 5 1/2 of each you can try if you want, but i want to keep them as i had a devil of a job finding them!

well ive found them on the internet - they arnt mega expensive either !!

Think im going to go for the mullen actually with the hanging cheek !!! xxx

they're not mega expensive, and they're beautifully made. i had trouble finding the full cheek ones without hooks, is what i meant. the other cheek styles seem to be quite easy to find.
best of luck, hope it works.

they stock them in my local tack shop so will look there on weekend if not ill order one !!
