hi guys, was hoping someone mite have an answer for this. My 14.2 12 year old mare has always been very sweet natured, has never ever kicked out at a person or other horse nor bitten, etc etc. ive owned her for 7 years so since she was 5. out hacking she is very forward going and takes great offence if she cant be in front (she walks very fast naturally and think part of this is due to getting annoyed having to walk slower behind), if she is made to go behind - something i often do , she does settle after a couple of sidewyas strops but nothing crazy. she has never reared or bucked in her life. this last 6 months or so she has started showing very clearly wen she is in season (somethings shes never done) before and in these last 6 months she has been ridden out with my friends 6 year old gelding - C - - who she seems to have major problems with - on a hack with C she will spend the whole ride flinging herself around trying to kick him - and i mean double barrels, huge cow kicks etc. and has caught him sevral times. if she is made to go behind she litearlly throws herself around like a physco - this has resulted in her falling over, pulling shoes off etc and is frankly dangerous. the intersesing thing is, wen she is actually in season she luuurves C, winking at him, wont leave his side, even tries to groom him on a hack. she is so damn quick - thats the pony in her and is very difficult to catch her in time before she flings her self out sideways, leaps about etc and kicks. im convinced she somehow thinks that C is a stallion - which has brought her to show herself in season, which culd explain the kicking at him, and the major flirting wens she in season. with all other horses she is her normal self which is very odd. it wud be a great shame is we cud no longer ride her and C out 2gether. we are at a loss , have tried her on oestess but no change, any ideas????

I would speak to your vet they may recommend she goes on to Regumate, to stop her coming in to season. Also you could have hr ovaries scanned to see if she has any growths etc casuing pain/ eratic behaviour

but she only behaves this way around this one horse, at home she liveswith my gelding and is no prob in any respect, surely if she was in pain she wud show this crazy behaviour at other times as well?

That is very true, she obviously has serious hots for him. How is she away from this horse to ahndle etc? Can you just avoid riding out with him whilst in season?

she is normal wen shes away from him altho after riding with him can b arsey and wound up.but wen she is in season she is winking at him, squirting, trying to hug him etc and genearlly wants his babies its the rest of the time she completely hates his guts and tries to kill him!!

Sounds much like an indecisive typical woman. If she hates him when not in season not sure what I can suggest really.

Don't ride out with C

as far as i know C isnt a rig but i suppose its a possibility - however is there any chance she could just think that he is a stallion?another thought we had is that he rules the roost at his yard and is a bit of a bully etc with other horses , any chance she picks up on this and being a dominant older mare is trying to put him in his place? of course the obvious answer is to not ride out with C but that prevents us from riding with a very good friend which wud be a big shame

I would recommend that you speak to you vet and also have some lessons on your pony so she listens to what you are asking her rather than kicking out etc which is not acceptable behaviour. If you cannot control your pony around your friends gelding you shouldn't ride out together as you are putting other people in danger as well as yourselves and your horses.

i dont personally think that having lessons on her is the answer, i can control her in every other situation from hunting to xc, dressage etc and have had her a long time. my friend who owns the gelding is a very experienced woman who has worked with horses all her life and she is at a loss too, i have had other ppl ride her out with C to check it isnt just me and cant stop her doing it, i agree that if we dont come up with a solution we will have to stop riding them2 gether which is a shame - i just find it v odd that she only behaves like this with C and even more odd that wen she is in season she loves him 2 bits - and this makes me belive it isnt an answer like she is simply being naughty and i cant control her

I think that's just mares I'm afraid. A little mare at my yard hated my boy on sight - yet in season, well it's a totally different story........
