I need either pursuasion or a kick up the bum or a slap in the face..
I have had a horse on full loan for the past 18 months and have recently stopped as I didn't enjoy the yard I was on and I couldn't do as much with the horse due to his age. I haven't previously completely owned my own but sorted the horses daily care and managed all the costs bar insurance. When I stopped I told myself I would start to look next spring to buy but have been itching to take it back up and have been looking at for sale ads pondering over what to do next. Today I find out there is a stable available on the same yard as my very experienced friend (stables rarely come up) and on getting home tonight I've worked out all my costs yearly and monthly and it's written on paper that I can clearly afford it.

So why can't I pluck up the balls to actually do something about it!!!!

This yard is closer to home with better turnout and facilities and I am in uni two 9-4 days from October. My friend has said she is happy to ever help me out if I need it and I would obviously do the same back for her. I'm not looking for something amazing just one that will do a bit of everything!

i think I am worried as its approaching winter and I did struggle with last years winter at previous yard but there was less turnout and it was an extra 20 minute journey a day plus the horse was on straw and it used to drive me mad coming home literally stinking every day as he always had a soaking wet bed (yes this is petty but washing hair every day is so annoying!!) but on new yard they are all on shavings.
I am also petrified of anything going wrong with purchased horse such as lameness issues or injury as I would hate to put £3000 towards a horse which I then can't ride or do anything with a year later.. I have factored in insurance (not something I've dealt with before as owner sorted it) and I have been quoted around £50 a month with petplan. Is this about right for average cover ?

I dont really know what i want in terms of replies i just needed to write everything down as my horsey friends aren't answering the phone and my non horsey people just don't seem to get it ha ha. Thanks for getting this far anyway!!

Go for it!

I recently bought my first horse away from home home (parents in Somerset and I'm doing a PhD in Sheffield). It took a lot of debate before I finally went for it! My insurance is about £30 a month btw.

Insurance sounds about right if you insure the horse for what it's actually worth as opposed to insuring for a nominal sum just to ensure vet fees are covered.

And often taking that step into ownership is a scary thing! Even if you know you can cope financially it's everything else that comes with horse ownership that is a worry too.
Making sure you have the right livery is important (DIY, part, full etc) DIY can be draining, especially if you need a break (enforced through illness, work or otherwise)
Full livery can be expensive.

Make sure you have a good instructor you trust to help iron out any teething issues.

And with regards to injury, these things happen, luck plays a part, but you can try and help yourself by choosing a horse with good conformation and getting it vetted. If we all worried about injuries etc we'd never have horses!

When it comes to looking for a horse, take your time, the right one will come along. Just put feelers out.

Good luck, horse ownership is fantastic and woeful- sometimes in equal measures!

Right then, listen........You only live once and life is short so enjoy doing what you can because you never know what is around the corner in your life.

I have enjoyed horses for nearly forty years and have lots to look forward to with youngstock coming on. But had I not attended a routine breast scan last February I would not be here in a years time.

I am halfway through being mended, but my situation has really made me focus on enjoying what I do and to look forward to getting back on my feet again. So OP, if you have the facilities, the money, time and dedication get on and enjoy keeping horses.

And, all you ladies out there in cyber land, make sure you attend your routine call ups for health checks, you just never know what life is about to throw at you.

Thank you everyone I think I just need that push, as my parents are non horsey they just don't seem to get it so can't really support me on the buying side of things. Yes I put cover in for about 2700 as I would be disappointed to loose the money I'd put in. And yes I am very lucky as I have two very experienced friends but both in different disciplines (eventing/dressage). And one will be on the same yard as me. Thanks for all your replies.. I am going to have a good look this week and put the word out that I am looking as I am happy to take my time to find the right one and will maybe feel better after viewing one as I slightly feel as if I'm in fantasy land and it will never happen.. Even though it can, if you know what I mean.

Just a little update, me and my friend are going to view a few horses in Cheshire next wed, one of which I am particularly excited about as she looks like completely my type. Must say though I am still a bit nervous and apprehensive but it seems to be only at night time when I have nothing else to do or think about!!
