Pony came in from field with eye like this, watering a little bit of bloody watery substance and what looks like some yellowy stickier pus-like stuff on the inside corner. Very swollen. She's okay - eating very happily, and we're cleaning it out with a brand new dishcloth and cool clean water every hour (closest to sterile we can get).

We think maybe she's just poked herself in the eye as she does snack on the bushes occasionally, or perhaps could it be horseflies (she is more susceptible to them than any other horse I've met).

Any help would be fab.

PS not sure if picture has posted or not.05AFD374-D8E4-4ED8-B6A2-EE154DE7F8A7.jpeg

Eyes are an emergency. The only time a vet didn't come out was when mine's swelled up like he'd been punched (allergy) and vet asked 'Is he trying to open it or trying NOT to open it? There was no discharge and it was bilateral.
ETA I was on the phone directly and the vet's question was in response to my describing his '3 rounds with Frank Bruno' appearance.

I agree with getting a vet out today.

If you're in an area where is is hard to get sterile water, you can buy bottles of if fairly cheaply on the internet to use for eyewash/wound cleaning (either on it's own or with cotton wool).

Thanks for all your very quick responses, you've all backed up everything I thought. Unfortunately parents against the vet but seeing as I'm 18 I might just give them a call, not to come out but just to see what they say to do or if they think it is an emergency situation.

Excellent idea to call your vet for some phone advice, good luck and please let us know how you get on
If your vet recommends a visit today I hope your parents will agree

My mare poked herself in the eye, we think on a dock stick, or thistle, or similar. She was successfully treated for a corneal ulcer by the vet who came out that day. I had a saddle fitting booked for the same day and continued with it, although only in walk and trot for a short time. Vet gave her a powerful painkiller, for which I was was very glad, I know from experience that a sore eye can be extremely painful.
Please get the vet out today, blood from the eye is extremely serious, my mare had a swollen, weeping eye but no blood.

When my horse had an eye like that he had scratched the eye and it ulcerated a few days of drops and it was fine.

funny you should say that! just had the vet out and it is an ulcer. she's got some antibiotic drops and some other drops as well as some of her own plasma. she's got some bute as well so popping down to get some speedi beet tomorrow. She may have to go into horsey hospital because the pain is making her tricky to put the drops in but it looks like because we caught it quickly she should be just fine!

You were right to go with your gut instinct and call the vet. Hopefully you’ve saved yourself more expense and worry. I always think a callout is worth it just so I can sleep if nothing else.

Eyes should always be treated as an emergency! You should call your vet for advice, not as on the Internet.

OP is 18 and their parents were not keen on calling a vet initially, although OP wanted to. I can well understand at their age turning to an internet forum for advice and confirmation that they should call a vet out.

Cooled recently boiled tap water would be fine. A fresh cotton wool ball each time you clean the eye - you can pour boiling water over it and let it cool before use to be sure that it is fairly sterile.

Right call to get the vet. Equine eyes need looking at asap if there is a problem, they can can go very badly wrong very quickly

It should start to feel better tomorrow so putting the drops in will get easier.

Thank goodness you acted in good time. I hope she makes a speedy return to full health. I don't think I have ever had any animal who is easy to put eye drops in - or treat any painful region without any objection - in the initial stages, at least.
