Im not sure if this is the right place but i know there is a lot of people viewing here but anyway I have found a stray dog(pretty much) and dont know what to do wiuth it. The story is theres a road i drive down and have seen this dog a few times in the middle of the road just sat there and today i decided to take it home and see where I could find its proper home. So have found out that this dog lives on a run down site which a man owns, hes doesnt look after the dog it roams about and a few people i have spoken to say that they have fed it a few times it has nearly got runover lots of times so im thinking would it be best to give it to the dog warden or just take it back and leave it (though I dont think it will be easy). I think its cruel to do this to a dog leaving it basically to fend for itself. This dog is so kind and friendly. any help please thanks xx

I would call your local dog warden tomorrow. They might know the dog if he roams regularly as you say.
What I wouldn't do is take it back. The owner might see you and could possibly be a bit peeved ... if he is not the caring type. He doesn't sound like it from what you've found out.

Is the dog thin? Does it look ill? If not, I would be tempted to take it back, it does have a home albeit not the most perfect. Otherwise you may land yourself in hot water if the man wants his dog back...

Its not thin, its fat if anything. Apparantly it roams about the estate on the opposite side of the main road and different people sometimes feed it. I just dont want it to be ran over like it nearly was today. Its upto the owner if he has it sleeping in a yard, but he should have it locked up being next to a busy road, and if it had road sense i wouldnt have found it in the middle of the road today. On the other hand, thats the dogs life, and maybe its now used to that lifestyle.

Want to do whats best for the dog and im unsure of what that is.

i would probably call the dog warden and explain the situation. let them make the decision, rather than the decision lying in your hands... as I wouldn't want you to get in trouble if the guy gets annoyed. the dog warden can investigate fully then to see if the dog is at risk?? good luck

keep it !or take it to your local vets as a stray if the owner wants it back that much like would ring around to find it then if they dont hopefully it will go to a loving owner!

Babybells I don't really think that's the answer. Not that this is the same thing but a nasty neighbour kidnapped and dumped my cat not long ago, and even though someone tipped me off as to the area he'd been left, it was totally horrendous trying to find him. Hours on the phone, poster and flyer dropping, trips to the cats' home, etc, etc. I never found him. I doubt any vet has a holding area for strays - they would more than likely pass the dog to the RSPCA. Not ideal.

Ok this guy may not be a very good owner but none of us know the whole situation, and I would never, ever wish what I went through on anyone else.

Since the new rules have come in, a stray dog is the responsibility of the dog warden, who you can contact on the number on your local council website tomorrow. Until then, you have 3 options.

1) Take it back to the owner.
2) Keep it overnight and contact the dog warden first thing tomorrow morning.
3) Let the dog go and report it first things tomorrow.
