need some help!

i have broken the base of my back and although i can still walk i cant muck out ect so i put my horses all on full livery or diy grass (depending on the horse) although i did ask for them not to be ridden.

i then had some rather disturbing news last night as someone told me that my horses mouth was cut!!! (and that my instructor was unqualifyed) i know i should have checked her out, but she seemed really nice! I think that she may have been riding my horse with out my permission as no-one the yard would question her being there!!! (she was always saying how she'd love to ride him!)

what do i do? what do i say? how do i explaine that i dont want her anymore as my instrucor?

please help!

I think first things first , you have to establish the facts from her - a) has she ridden your horse , b) IS she not qualified or is someone else just making waves , your horse could have cut it's mouth faffing about at grass , so my advice is before you wade in , talk to this instructor and find out exactly what is going on....don't shoot me down but some of the best horsemen around are sometimes people who aren't " qualified " this doesn't make them a bad teacher , vice versa some highly qualified bods can't " teach" for toffee. Don't get yourself chucked off the yard when really you're in no fit state for the hassle...hope this helps.
 
First of all do you know your horse has been ridden by your instructor, his mouth ,if it is damaged, could have been caught on something in the field.

The livery yard needs to be keeping you informed on the health of your horse not a friend who may just be guessing what has happened to it.

The fact that your instructor is not qualified is not a reason to stop using her, qualifications are not always that important but being good at the job is, she may be very experienced and able to help your riding more than someone with all the exam results.

I would speak to the YO and ask what is going on before doing anything, they should be caring for your horse and in control of people coming onto the yard without permission and riding, if that is what has happened, be clear on your facts before you act.
 
I agree 100% with post above, IMO qualifications really mean jack and there are plenty out there who like to tell a story or two either to stir or for their own gain

i now feel like like leaving the yard because i feel that people should have told me!

It is slightly confusing though because I just looked up someone I know is a BHSII and although she has certainly qualified she has not paid to keep up her registration. So just because your instructor is not listed as registered it doesn't mean she is not qualified.

I would agree with previous posters- ask your YO what has been going on 1st :)

I'm very qualified and have many years competing and teaching at a high level but am not on the Register of Instructors and never have been. (it's very expensive to be on it)

Tbh I have never been asked by a potential client if I am qualified :/
 
If you don't want anyone riding your horses take your tack home if you can. I always take my tack home if my horse isn't to be ridden for more than a few days, like when he is on box rest or I am away for the weekend. My tack is safer at home than at the yard, and it means nobody will be riding my horse or borrowing my tack (not that anyone at my yard would, but has happened on previous yards!).
I have to agree with previous posters about how to approach the situation regarding whether your instructor is qualified and/or riding your horses without permission. It might all be rumours and you don't want to accuse her of something she didn't do! Speak to your Yard Owner/Yard Manager in the first instance and then decide where to go from there depending what YO says. Good luck, I hope your back gets better soon!
 
I am a qualified instructor but since leaving the industry for equine insurance (Wot the hell was I thinking LOL) I have never paid to be kept on the list. Granted I dont teach anymore, well except the odd lesson to a friend and daughter. I would ask your YO first before getting yourself worried about it.

Take you tack home and make sure the YO and a few friends on your yard know that you do NOT want your horses riding.

I kept my girl at a yard 15 years ago and I was on my way past at 10pm and thought - wot the hell - I will pop in and give her a late night cuddle. To my horror when I got to her stable, it was open, light on and no horse... I then, luckily, ran round to the indoor school and noticed its lights were on...one of the yard lads was riding her...I was fuming...I shouted abuse at him, got my mare and put her back in stable. Sorted her out and went straight over to YO house and put in a complaint. He was sacked the following morning ha ha ha. My mare never liked men after that so what he did with her I will never know!

Just make sure you make it clear with people that they are not to be ridden and leave your mobile number so that if they see anything to contact you straight away. But the YO is the best bet!!
 
Sorry to hear about your back. I agree with others and that you really need to get the full facts before you can make a decision on what to do. I would also like to add that qualifications aren't everything. One of my son's instructors (also a friend of mine) does not possess formal qualifications. She has however evented at the highest levels including going round Badminton. I think she knows what she's doing. If you have had lessons from this person presumably you are happy with how/what she is teaching? That of course does not mean she has the right to ride your horse.

Are you happy with your instructor? Is she teaching you and you're progressing as you would want? Qualifications are not the be all and end all.

It all sounds like chinese whispers to me and a case of 2+ 2 = 5.

Why would your instructor ride your horse without your knowledge?
 
I am an instructor and am not on the BHS list- you need insurance and child protection to be on the list. I qualified nearly 30 years ago and when the list came out I never bothered as I had (apart from helping friends) stopped teaching and was doing research. Just because she is not on the list doesn't mean she is not qualified.

Haven't read the entire thread but I would be very cross if anyone rode my horse without my permission- they wouldn't do it twice!

No but from your own post she probably isn't insured.

Personally I wouldn't want an instructor, for kids, who hadn't got a CRB either.

Insurance an absolute must IMO... Although you can't get a ECRB done on yourself if you're self employed and not part of an umbrella organisation - only a basic CRB...

They mean nothing to me except a potential false sense of security and I have big issues with the current methods of disclosure for ECRBs... But that's a personal opinion... :)

You can get insurance without being on the list. Anyone who takes money for teaching without insurance is crazy unless you are employed to teach at a riding school in which case their insurance covers you and by law they have to do a child protection check! I know this as I helped out teaching at a riding school for a few months when they were having problems getting qualified staff. Given I am not insured to teach I made sure I was insured under their cover and the owner told me he was obliged to do a child protection check which was fine by me- I have nothing to hide!
