....Horse flies.
Does anyone know of a repellant that works against horse flies in particular.
Riding just now is an ordeal for me and Horsey. I spend the hack swishing my whip all around her and slapping them off her to stop her being bitten, as a result, i don't notice them landing on me and get bitten, What a mess i am with bites. They have even bitten through my jods.

Whoever comes up with a proper repellant that works on these useless little feckers will make a fortune.
What are they good for anyway, apart from making peoples lives a misery!

We are suffering up here to
mad.gif
,poo picking the fields today in shorts and they took a liking to my legs, god they smart when they bite you
frown.gif
,and they were only little, have seen the big buggers and dont want biting by them
crazy.gif
,poor horses without flyrugs and masks at our yard have been driven mad by them, fortunately kitted my lad out yesterday,so he is horsefly free
grin.gif

let me know if you find an anti bite for humans but i doubt it,they are an evil waste of space, just like mosquitos and wasps

I believe that the only effective way of getting rid of them is Nepalm....

,i cannot believe how bad they are this yr
mad.gif
,i ride out with a schooling whip so i can reach the little feckers whilst we hacking out,it works well scraping em off,i would have been flattened if i didnt take it with me
frown.gif
,tis the only thing in the world that would make him roll with me on him,and i cant blame him!

ours have fliy sheets on too and fly masks. It is riding that is the problem. I even considered riding her with her fly sheet on. Instead they got the day off and chilled in nice cool stable where the evil little sh1ts couldn't get them.
There must be something that works. Dear god, we can send people to live in space for months at a time, surely they can find something to get rid of them.

FlyAway Defleqt for midges / biting insects (white bottle with
green and yellow label) - great stuff - by far and away the best repellent I have found, including with sweat itch

i use one that comes in a white bottle with green writing- possibly barrier? it smells like sweets and works a treat
grin.gif

THe only 100% effective Anti Horse fly (and for that matter mosquito and general bug) repellant I know is the one we used to use in Cyprus.....Zivannia....a locally brewed double distilled sprit of all the grape skins left over after wine making. It is about 80% proof a guy in the village used to make his own you could drink it but were in danger of going blind......

That mixed with a little water and sprayed over the horses and you worked wonders!

We are over there for a holiday in August and I will be paying Elias a visit......as all the overpriced stuff I have bought in holland seems to actually attract the boogers!

Yep, I use this and really notice the difference. I use it before turning my mare out and the horse flies leave her alone and bite all of the other horses!

That sounds like Grappa! What ratio of spirit:water did you use?

I was using that yesterday whilst hacking a friend's horse - it didn't seem to help though, and when the horseflies attacked at the start of the wooded bit, he bronced me off

Leovet Power Phaser works for me but the local tack shops are sold out. It stinks!

When you're knocking them off horses flick them away don't smack them or squish them. When you squash them everything in their stomach comes out their mouth and can leave you/your horse with an infected bite. Lovely...

Grr I hate them! Between clegs and midges there is no hope, bring on winter. Also has anyone noticed an increase in non-biting but annoying black buzzing flies?

We have millions/zillions of 'normal' black flies, they are in the stables, in the feed room - in the house, those sticky fly catchers are full up in a day! I am going to our country store that sell lots of different fly catchers today, you can get big ones for cow sheds/barns, I will get a few of them ... I HATE FLIES!

To be honest as little as possible......what percentage proof is Grappa? the commercially available zivannia didn't work only the homemade stuff.....which is why I would never dare drink it!......if you try the Grappa and it works let me know!

ditto this i'm using the cream of this for my boy who wont entertain the idea of a spray bottle anywhere near him and they will not touch him when iv caked him in it, riding has been no problem with flies for us. Be warned it bloomin stinks!
grin.gif

Flies arent bad here at the moment-had problems with a mass of greenfly from a big tree on the yard but nothing that bites- not yet anyway!

We are being plagued by horse flies at the moment, and I have found that the Nettex advanced fly spray is wonderful. Seems to last for a whole hack and you can see the flies desparate to land on neddy but they don't!

Thanks everyone, there are a few options to try.
Power phaser is not one i have seen in feed place, will try on line
Scotlass - does Flyaway defleqt def work on horse flies? where do you buy it?

TPO thanks for info on swatting. i do slap them off but it is really fast so hopefully don't get chance to throw up.
laugh.gif
I will try to flick rather than squish, just in case There is something that brings on a tourettes type reaction. Everytime I get one and see the little sod fall to the ground, i can't help shouting 'wee fecker'.
blush.gif
Most unladylike but i can't seem to help it.
Where in scotland do you buy power phaser?
Must go on line and see who stocks them all and buy one of each to test out.
Doubt if any of them have Nepalm or Grappa
shocked.gif

but will try the others.

We haven't had the black buzzy flies yet, but they will come. They are horrible buzzing round your head and the horse.
I use my schooling whip to get rid too, jsut as well she is not whip shy anymore.

Thanks all for your input.

I used Power Phaser in the past but stopped because it never had an ingredients list on it so I had no idea what was in it!

I use Coopers, it seems to be pretty effective, I believe it's the only one that actually kills the insects as well.
