Flatwork is finally coming together with my baby as are trotting poles etc so it really is time to get her a gp or jumping saddle sorted so we can begin jumping. Seen and tried a few on her that i like particularly the jeffries vss although when it comes to buying one i will have it professionally fitted.

Just a little question about paying for the damn things really! I'm now at the age in in a well paid job so big purchases like this are now down to me and not my mum. It always fills me with amazement when people go on about buying new saddles all the time that people just happen to have a spare £800 or so lying around spare in there bank account. Does this really happen or am i being niaeve (sp!)?

Saving up is going to take me a while. I pay rent at home, all upkeep on both horses, car insurance and my car loan for my 4x4. I'm managing well so far but it will take me a good few months to save up the amount needed for a saddle. My thought were on getting a credit card with 0% on purchases for 6 months, paying for the saddle, cutting the card up and paying it all off in that 6 month period. I've never had a credit card before or any debt before i got the car loan,am i being silly, or should i do it the long way and save up for the next 6 months or so myself?

thanks for any advice guys!

Not many people have a spare 800 in the bank. For most it's a cse of living on the never never, 4 credit card paying off the minimum installments each month.

Do it the long way, save hard and buy it outright. A credit card is just too tempting. Can you get a second hand Jeffries? and still get it fitted? it would probably cost you half of that.

Being an accountant I used to play with credit cards and swap from one to another.

I don't do that any more as they charge you 2%-5% for the pleasure and my aim was to make money for it

If you don't get any stupid ideas that you can keep spending you'll be fine.

If you don't have a credit card you need one - you don't get the same consumer protection from a debit card and its not a good thing to make a purchase with!

I have my everyday credit card, that is paid off in full automatically each month and it pays me 1% cash back of everything I spend.

Then I may take out a 0% purcahse card and rack up debt on one and direct debit the minimum repayment (suggest this as easy to forget payment date and that costs £15!). I then save the money in my savings or current account (my current account pays 4%) and then repay

Its all very sad, but I can make at least £200 per year from interest!

People have said to me that i need to get a credit card as it will help me as long as i am sensible. I know from loaning the 4k i needed to buy my car i struggled getting a good deal as i had no previous credit history to speak of at all.

Sounds silly but i hear of people getting into all sorts of debt which is why getting a credit card seems scary to me! Although, I do know im pretty sensible. I have a small overdraft i have never gone over and every single one of my loan payments goes out by direct debit on my payday.

So buying a saddle with a credit card, cutting it up and paying it off isnt such a stupid idea then? Im not fussed about having one in the long term. Never really had any experience with 'getting credit' before so i need the idiots guide! lol

Actually unless your overdraft is free, you'd be better getting rid of it by putting more on the credit card

However you have to be strict and stop buying the non-essentials, so no drinks at the pub, fags, magazines (H&H is a unnecessary luxury!!), eating out, chocolate bars, snacks, holidays, premade sandwiches etc etc !!

Granted doesn't make for an interesting life, but you save tons of money!!

So i can save money, get thinner and get my new saddle

lol.

Whenever i look at my bank statement they only charge me say £2 or so a month for having the overdraft so its not a big deal - its only a small overdraft of £600 (well i think its small

- not sure!)

To be honest though i dont spend all that much money on 'extras' although the smoking is one thing i do want to pack in. Expensive and unhealthy to boot! Apart from that though there isnt much else. I am running a long dist relationship with someone who lives near cheltenham so train fares are costing me a bomb but that isnt something i can really scrimp on unfortunately! Bloody men

well my advice - move to cheltenham!!

Think of the money you will save - and its great here and there aren't enough people I know that go show jumping!!

This website is really good:
www.moneysavingexpert.com

You can do things like select flights that are definitely only £1 and gives you good information about credit cards and back accounts.

I would go 2nd hand I have absolutely immaculate saddles all fitted proffessionally and all very reasonable.
