I have a thoroughbred gelding that seems to be itching one side if himself. Just sort of where the saddle sits.
Originally I thought fleas so u bought flea power. However this didn't seem to work. When I took his rugs off he was straight away itching and biting. His skin seems alittle scurfy in just this place his neck and bum are clear of scurf.
He gets brushed twice a day once before riding and once when I do evening stables. What should I do? Would bathing help ?

If its where his saddle sits, would make me think sweat?

Wash his rug and numnah, bath him and see if hes any better. After riding, I would sponge him down too, get the sweat off him.

Is he clipped?

Was about to say the same thing...Are your numnah's clean? and is he clean when you tack up? Also brushing twice a day is good, but only if your brushes are clean too. :)

Nothing in his rugs. His under rug is brand new. He has his pads changed twice a week and if he gets particularly sweaty he has them changed. He gets sponged Down. Brushes are clean. I take a lot if pride in his appearance. He's been clipped Ive only had him 2 months got him fresh out if racing. It's driving me mad. Don't understand why it's only on one side. Could it be to do with malting? I've taken a picture and way I could get it in here ?

To do a picture upload it to photobucket, then copy and paste the 'IMG' code below the picture.

If its not sore it sounds like it is shedding and warmer weather related and now has created an 'itch/scratch' cycle, if he has a scurfy coat I would recommend putting a drop of oil in his food or ideally micronised linseed which cleared my horse's scurfy coat and stopped her itching in a couple of weeks.

I think bathing with a soothing, moisturising shampoo e.g. tea tree would be a good idea and seizing the opportunity when we have a sunny day to get the rugs off and air the skin.

Sounds like he might be too warm??

Have you uploaded the picture anywhere? Try Photobucket, or if you stick it on FB send me the link and I'll do it for you :)

If it was washing powder wouldn't it affect him every where ?
It looks sore but he lets me touch it and put cream on.
He's on chaff, cool mix and carrots.
Find me on Facebook and ill send you the picture.
