I need to use my field shelter as a stable as my mini has laminitis and needs box rest. The gate is metal with mesh at the bottom and i am worried she may jump up and get legs through the top bars as getting stressed,we are on week 3 so far. Ideally need to line it but not sure whats best or how to do it. i could use small wire mesh and tie it but has anyone done similar .. Ideally want her to be able to see out but be safe.

I've lined this gate with chicken mesh, all edges are folded over on themselves then folded over to the outside of the gate then fastened tightly with cable ties. it took a while to trim off all the 'spikes' and do the folding but I know its safe

If you are worried about using a flexible mesh like chicken wire something like puppy pen panels (cable tied on) may be an option?

We've used sheets of exterior ply which you bolt on with threaded screws. They come in 8 x 4 ft sheets. You'll have to drill the metal for the screws and do make sure the hinge post is sturdy due to the added weight of the gate. Use round ended screws, the round end to the inside so they don't get stabbed by them and cut off the ends. Much safer than mesh.

Four of my horses are stables in stables with five bar gates as their doors. The yard has put wood on the inside and bolted it to the gates.

I've got mine lined with weldmesh panels - pricey unless you can find some in a local scrap yard. Fastened on with wire ties. If he is very determined he might go through chicken wire, although I'd use it for routine lining. He wouldn't be able to see out with wood/ply, as a mini, and I would think that would be stressful

I've used exterior ply held on by cable ties for a thick (rain proof gate) if you want her to see out I'd look for something stronger than chicken wire, some sort of heavy mesh (whatever your local builders merchant has to hand) you can normally buy it in sheets and cable ties are easy. Obviously holes small enough that feet can't get through!

Or cut peep.holes in the ply :D

ive ordered some heavy duty mesh in a panel as local stuff is quite flimsy so hoping it gets here soon. may have another look round builders yard as although wood is secure she cant see out and is more likely to jump i think.

We used heavy duty metal sheets with small holes, bought silage ties (massive industrial zip ties) to secure to gate right to top. Works a treat and gate not too heavy. Once spare ends cut off zip ties looks v smart not bodged at all.

If the bottom is mesh can't you just line the top bit with ply and cable ties? If she's a mini she will still see out? It's hard to get all the sharp edges off weld mesh.

The bottom is mesh but i still think bigger size than her little feet so am covering that with heavy duty tarpaulin as this has eye holes i can secure with and will stop wind and rain. i have ordered a mesh panel for the top so shouldnt have any sharp bits but have thought i could wrap a tail bandage or similar over the top. This has been a nightmare but think this should work so she can see out but be safe.
