Organising a show for this sunday...

What obstacles would you include in Family Mount and RC horse.

I have my own ideas...but is always good to hear what other people like to get in these classes.

Family mount is for horse/pony suitable for all family and RC, obviously suitable for all RC activities

Thanks

I've done RC a few times and the RC shows they just seem to have 1 rustic fence of sabout 2'3-2'6. The bigger ones I have done had 3 WH fences which were 2'6.

Yes that's what they always seem to do. Personally I prefer having more fences, but then I think if they really are a RC horses they should be able to manage 3 2'6 fences. At the Riding Club shows I have done, people have moaned and asked for the jump to be put down to about 2'

. The last show I did the judge was fine if you didn't jump or jumped a smaller fence, but marks were awarded for jumping, which I think is fair.

I would expect to see a coloured and rustic fence no more than 6 in total. I havew seen it where they have put a car or ballons for you to ride past to see if sutable for all the family - produced some interesting results. Also I have been asked to dismount and remount on own / with help to see if pony stands still.

Hope that helps

I think it depends on the type of show because although to find the best RC type you'd have a small course this might put people off, I know some kids who go in this class who want a go at jumping at comps for the first time and would be put off if there was a course... I've been asked to jump the same jump from both directions within a show before.

As for family horse/pony near me they always have to be ridden by an adult and a child and anything else is at the judge's discretion. However I've seen it get a bit silly/dangerous when people bring in a selection of props and it becomes a competition between who's got the most imagination!

I have been asked in the past to get off/on from the wrong side - always amazing how many people can't do this. Not sure about balloons - don't want people plopping off all over the place!

I've been asked to do that in equitation as it tests the rider but can't see how the wrong side aspect tests the horse/pony unless they seem totally confused if they're not used to it!

In family h/p I've seen people demonstrate a child picking up the pony's feet (that was one of the tame "tricks" sometimes the child would pick up pony's feet in order that they can more easily fit between the front legs while they crawled around them figure of 8 style

!!!)

I think it only tests them in that it asks them to stand still whilst being mounted from the ground in an unfamiliar way. I personally wouldn't want to ask anyone to do anything that puts them in any danger bearing in mind not all ponys entered will be true family mounts and show grounds can be very spooky places.

I remember seeing someone enter with their (noncompulsory) "Family Pony Kit" (a bucket containing various items) and it backfired somewhat - it turned out that pony had an aversion to being rubbed over with a plastic bag - luckily it wasn't too spectacular a protest!

It didn't mind standing with its foot in a bucket though...

Request a "Family Pony Kit" - a bucket, plastic sheet, plastic bag, large umberella, details of their insurance policy etc. etc.!!!

Opps, when I did these classes it was about 12 years a go and you could still have things like bareback classes! - Dont think a show would dare now
