Hi all,

So 3 weeks ago my boy came up lame. To cut a long story short he was scanned a week ago and it showed a substansial tear in his deep digital flexor tendon just where his very long check ligament ends!

Was told to keep him turned out in a small area (probably about 18x18), given tensolvet to apply topically and danilonm twice a day. I was told not to boot him.

He's feeling a bit better about himself now after a week on danilon and has started running about in his little field. He came in today and the tendon was soooo hot you could cook a couple of fried breakfasts on it and so swollen. I have put sports medicine boots on him now and stopped the tensolvet as his skin was not doing very well.

HAs anyone else experinced this kind of injury? What did you do with yours? The last thing I want is to let him make it worse. Would you take away the danilon? I'm going out of my mind - if it gets worse i've already been told he'll have to be pts.

Thanks in advance

would take the smb's off as they generally hold alot of heat in the leg . When mine had tendonitis we had lots of cold hosing ,he was on anilon for the first couple of weeks but was acting the fool so came off it so that he actually felt some pain(as horrible as that sounds) and was boxed rested for 13 weeks with restricted turnout for a further 8. Appreciate not quite the same situation - hope things improve soon

Hi, I used to work at an equine hydrotherapy spa. We used to get lots of tendon injuries, the best treatment for them was to keep them cold, obviously at the spa we put them in the spa but cold hosing and areborn cold boots help just as good. When your horse has been scanned to show no more tear a gentle walking routine for 5 mins then gradually up before you should be able to start riding.

I would also say the boots will probably be more of a hindrance than a help as they retain heat and are more to protect against tendon injury than cure one. Good luck - having had a horse with a tendon injury I know what a worry it must be for you.

I'd say quit with the painkillers so he can feel the tendon and therefore not run around quite so much, and ice cup as much as possible.

i would ice pack him, and cold hosing, and box rest. tendons heal best if kept really cold. i have bandaged picnic ice packs on on top of a thin bandage (not next to skin dont want ice burn). you can buy flexi ice packs which are probably easier. good luck.

I think that you should speak to your vet about the danilon, don't just take him off it as it isnt just acting as a painkiller, it is also an anti-inflammatory therefore helping with the healing process.
By running around in the field he is aggrevating it and could possibly do with either smaller paddock or box rest.

I would leave off the boots and poss cold hose every time you are up at the horse for ten mins or as long as you can.
