That's the crux of the matter really - our homebred filly is well grown and ready for breaking and light work (she is three next week, but very stocky and leg at each corner) but she hasn't made the height I will be comfortable with - she is 14hh at the most - and she's also going to need more 'life' than I can give her. I'm a happy hacker, and she is a busy little horse, dead nosy and always wanting to be part of the action.

So, for anyone who buys youngsters, do you prefer to break them yourself or buy them and do them yourself?

And, sorry, but a how much question! She is 3/4 section D and 1/4 Appaloosa, white with brown spots - how much would I sensibly ask in order to sell, unbroken?

Thanks everyone, it's taken a while to come to this decision, not looking forward to seeing her go but it's the best decision for her long term.

hi, i prefer to buy youngsters myself, and i wouldnt look at her at just gone 3 if she had already been broken. I prefer to back my own and leave them later so that would rule her out for me.

cant help with price im afraid :)

Hi there she sounds like a lovely filly. Some more info may help people advise you:

What have the parents done, and is she registered?

I think it depends a bit - some people prefer backed and ready to bring on, happy hackers may prefer backed and ridden quite a bit, personally I don't mind but I would prefer that the horse to be well handled and has good manners on the ground.

Also, I prefer that they have not done much as 3 year olds (prefer to ride them at 4 yo)
If she is a late foal I would not want her to be backed yet.

Where is she at now, has she been long reined etc? Sat on?

Perhaps if you post a photo and some more details it will be easier to advise on price.

Thank you, didn't want to say too much unless I was told off for advertising! Registered Welsh P/B, dam is no longer with us, didn't do anything except hunt, sire won at Kent County as a two year old, I will post a few pics in the photo section! Not long reined, lunged etc (we have no facilities) led about, feet trimmed, vacs up to date etc

I sell some of my youngsters as weanlings, yearlings or 2 year olds - to people who want to build a 'bond' before the riding stage starts. Some back them themselves - some send them back to me for backing.

Three year olds I tend to sell either as JUST backed (walk, trot & canter and hack out quietly) - or after 6 months hacking/light schooling.

IF you're selling posh warmbloods - with a serious claim to be a competition horse - then many of these buyers will prefer unbacked. But for the more general sort of riding horse, people buying 3 year olds TEND to prefer them backed.
