A new livery arrived at the start of last month for DIY and has hardly been seen the horse has basically been dumped in the field and has been ridden around fove times in the last 5 weeks...
now I know it's up to the owner how often they ride there horse but those 5 times that it has been ridden are the 5 times she's been at the yard.
At the weekend all the horses have come off the fields at night now, all the liveries are more than aware of the turnout routines as it's made perfectly clear in the contracts but this said livery has been nowhere to be seen for a week now, have tried to get in touch via text, left voicemails etc. But had no reply but has been plenty busy on facebook!
People like this don't deserve to have a horse, if you can't be bothered to put the time into him, what's the point in having one?!?
Sorry about that just needed to let off a bit of steam!!

We have one just the same, its coming to a head now though and she has to leave but how anybody can leave a horse in the field for weeks on end without seeing it is beyond me.

Exactly, it is beyond me how people can leave them for so long without coming to check on them it just shows how little they care for the animal in my opinion!
No, thankfully one of the other liveries has kindly left her two out to keep him company until we get it sorted out. I don't think she will sticking around for very long!

I know someone who had the same problem.. owner was given warning and eventually horse was signed over to a charity after abandonment notice was over, she kept the tack and all as owner never bothered to make contact.

As a relative newcomer to the world of horses (6 years) this is an area that totally baffles me.

Why bother owning a horse if all you want to do is occasionally ride at weekends, why not just find a local riding school.

I guess some people see owning a horse as some sort of status symbol, but don't want the responsibility or work that goes with ownership.

I live next door to somebody like that. There is a top rail on a post and rail fencing broken and standing vertically for 2 years. They have not poo picked since I moved in. They feed the horse on clippings from the ride-on mower. I could go on...

Im not advocating horse neglect, but this part I've quoted above isn't relevant to that. The answer is that you get to ride the same horse, who you have a relationship with rather than being just another person who rides him, over time you school the horse into what you want, you can decide to ride on a whim with no need for prior booking, you can ride where and at what speed you choose, you can use a saddle that fits you not just the horse and can choose other items of tack to suit you eg reins, you can choose the look of the horse eg long tail or hogged mane, you get to do horse care chores which some people enjoy. You can't get any of that from a riding school.

S&S, you seem to have missed the point.

I was referring to the OP's post and similar cases I have seen, where horses are pretty much dumped in the field with only a rare visit from the owner. Hence my comment.

NeilM you are exactly right, people do see owning horses as a status symbol which is just ridiculous. If you're not willing to put the care and attention into your horse then why bother at all, it is just neglect at the end of the day!
Willhegofirst yes the YO and myself have tried to get in touch with her I was almost tempted to leave her a message on her fb page I was getting so mad but obviously that is deemed as being rather unprofessional lol!

Well, the YO sounds as if they have the situation in hand, and presumably is now charging this owner for checking this horse, and will be adding the full livery charges to her bill from this weekend.

Yes amyway she is now being charged for full livery as horse has had to be brought in because thE weather has been awful and couldn't expect the other livery to leave her horses out in that weather because said livery can't be bothered with her poor horse!
This morning she appeared and had absolutely nothing to say about why she hadn't been up or in contact and when confronted about it she just basically shrugged it off with a 'just because' answer. I was fuming!
She has now been given a warning and if she's not up every night to bring her horse in at night she will be asked to leave unless she states that she wants the horse on assisted DIY or full livery.
