I'm hoping to buy my first trailer soon and need some advice on what I'd need and what to look out for.
I have a 14.1hh pony so size isn't an issue for me but I'l like to take my friend out too who owns a 17hh horse - I think she suggested an Ifor Williams 510.
So - what trailers should I be looking at and what do I need to check for when viewing them?
Freshly made rice krispie cakes for all advice received.
(Before you start worrying about towing vehicles we've just seen a nice Defender 110, if we don't get that one we'll get something similar)

Oh you'll be lucky to get an ifor williams 510 theyre like hens teeth, i got one yesterday after looking for 6months they are so harn to find. if your getting an ifor williams just make sure you get one with aluminium floor and just check the partitions and electrics are all in working order then you should be good to go :)

I would recommend Ralph Bailey nr. Bridgewater. He is very honest and fair with prices. Also does 2nd hand they are serviced properly before sale.

You won't do better than an IW510 and there are plenty for sale. Just make sure if you buy privately, that you check the chassis number with Ifor Williams themselves. They will tell you the year of manufacture and if it's been stolen. Go for one with an aluminium floor and check the roof for leaks

Ok - probably a daft question but I assume when looking at a trailer you would want to check the brakes work - how would you do this?
Someone else also suggested Ralph Baily so I think we'll be taking a trip down to Bridgwater.

Ok - if IW 510 are hard to come by - what other equivalent trailers could I look at?
You could look at a Bateson ascot bit more up market and better quality suspension or fautras very good but rare and people who have them usaly have a list of "if you want to sell let me know"... depends how much you have to spend but
if you can strech to a new one you wont lose much money as people will pay almost new price for a tidy S/H trailer...

Hi a HB510 will be too big as these are for 16.2hh horses +, you will need a HB505 or HB506 trailer. I got mine from Universal Trailers in Sussex, they are very good and helpful so if its just a few queries give them a call when in need of any help for anything trailer related. They also have a lot of stock , new and second hand but will also give you advise if you were to be buying from a private seller too, give em a try 01403 782862.

things to look for when looking for trailer, check the service history, get the serial number and call ifor williams to make sure it is not a stolen trailer, check the side panels to make sure they are not soft or going soft, and check the floor and go underneath the trailer to check the floor. Ideally aluminium flooring is best but then you go up in price. Your defender will be perfect to tow with by the way!

Bateson Deaville!! fab trailer, i wanted one of these over the HB10 just because of the suspention. and i felt it was less likely to be stolen, just coz you dont see as many of them, i love mine and carries my 17hh with loads of space.

Love my Bateson. It's a cracking trailer, light and airy. The suspension is great & it's well built. I think they are hard to come across second hand though, but def worth a look if you do see one.

to check brakes on trailer you do a rolling break check (trailer empty lol) drive forward and do emergency stop if trailer shudders abit the breaks work
