needs some advise please

she trots at normal pace on lunge and in field, but prefers to canter in field and on lunge. when ridden she trots nicely for sitting trot then when i rise she trots nicely for rising trot, the only time she gets quicker is if i push her on for a canter.

this was the first time i asked her to trot under saddle. she doesn't rush into a big fast trot as soon as i ask her. got a meeting with yard manager later so she can show me the plan of what she is going to do with her

Trotting horses don't all look like Standardbreds, they can be a lot more Thoroughbred-like in conformation and looks.

It's just the way you describe her trot getting faster and faster is similar to a few people who I've spoken to about retraining trotters (as oppose to pacers). They're trained to remain in the gait whilst also increasing their speed and being taught not to 'break stride' and canter means that when they come out of whatever form of racing they've been involved in, they simply continue to do what they've been taught. Having said that, I've not met a person yet who has failed to get a trotter or a pacer to canter :) and some of the ones I've seen on the racetrack this summer haven't even learnt how NOT to canter yet ;)

Best of luck with your horse anyway, there's several threads on here with tips on how to retrain trotters and pacers, so even if your mare isn't one of the above, the tips may still be useful.

I have a Dutch harness horse his parents ASB's both imported to holland from the US to 'improve 'the Dutch harness horses.
I broke him to ride a ten it was very difficult to get him to canter but we got there in the end I just had to say every day on each leg we are doing some it did take a long time though.
 
It might be an idea to ride her while she is on the lunge and then she will hopefully understand what you are asking of her? just a thought :)
 
thanks ladies, my yard manager and yard owner (mother and daughter) have a plan of action in place for her and it all looks good, I took her for her first hack along the seawall the other day and she was as good as gold, I know she will be great and it will take time. I am just so thankful that I have a wonderful yard manager
