Hi all,

I've heard that Neem Oil is very good for treating/preventing mud fever, so I'm going to invest in some for my mare who currently has it. Just a question with how often should I apply it? And whether I should keep her in for the time-being? She does have quite a few scabs on her backs, but fortunately they do not seem to be sore/oozing! We do have alot of boggy mud where we are, and I can't keep her in forever. The mud (and mud fever) is always going to be an issue until winter is over. I was thinking of keeping her in for a few days, then investing in some turnout boots? Could I apply the Neem Oil with the boots on top for turnout?

Sorry for the silly questions, I haven't had to deal with mud fever before.

Thanks in advance.

What ever you do please spot test first, I used Neem oil last winter and my lad had a reaction to it, his legs went double their size and had blisters with pus. I was recommended a anti dandruff shampoo Nizoral, wash with this, leave on the legs and make sure they are totally dry before you turn out. My lad's legs cleared up in 2 weeks and he hasn't had mud fever this year.

Thank you for your reply. I definitley will spot test first, my girl is quite sensitive. Did you wash with Nizoral daily?

My lad can not have pig oil etc either, he is very sensitive skin wise on his legs. No, I washed in warm water, left the foam on his legs to dry out and that was him for a week. If you type it into search it should come up with some posts.
