I’ve heard a lot of people raving about neem oil as a solution for mud fever/mites.

My cob seems to suffer from both – he has very thick but small scabs on his heels. They are worse at the back but they are not sore and the skin around it is never raw. The scabs themselves are thick and dark – in fact the ones at the back are almost like mini ergots.

He also gets some sorer scabs behind his knees which has responded very well to treatment with boots nappy cream. I also put oil on his legs as a barrier to the mud.

Vet had a look at them and said that the thicker scabs looked like they would most likely be caused my mites. We discussed the injection that’s available but since he’s had it before and it didn’t work we decided not to go down that route and she prescribed some frontline spray.

I applied it at the weekend so don’t expect to see any results yet.

I was wondering if neem oil might be another product worth looking into – I’ve looked at some of the web sites and there seem to be a variety of products – shampoo, salve and the neat oil itself.

I’m just wondering what’s best to start with – the pure oil itself or a neem based product!
