HI. The Malaysian SPCA equine division is currently working to try to save some horribly neglected horses living in Sabah (Borneo). This case was reported in June, and the situation monitored, but since that time, we think about 40 have died as a result of sickness, starvation and infected wounds, and those remaining are in a very bad way. We need to act NOW, but simply can't afford to, and do not have enough legislative power to seize/ rescue them.
Your comments of outrage on this case would really help us to pressure relevant authorities to save these horses. We have made some progress but its really not enough. Please see these pictures and articles to understand better the suffering of these horses, and respond either either on on one of those websites, so we can show the international outrage this abuse causes.
Thank you, Kate

I tried not to make this post defamatory but if anyone finds it offensive I apologise - please tell me and i will edit accordingly. The pictures speak for themselves and all we want is to try to end these horses' suffering.

I have just read this post & the press release from Selangor SPCA, according to their statement this stable is owned by an "endurance strongman". Surely if he is well known in international endurance circles then they could put some pressure on him? I have searched the name of the alleged owner as mentioned in the press release and it would appear he has received awards for his horsemanship! Clearly horsemanship & feeding/basic care are two completely different things!
I have sent an email of support to Selangor SPCA & hopefully many others will too.

is this not the same person that was reported last year?
He was the Mayor of Malaysia and even the King of Malaysia failed to secure the future of these animals.....it was well reported on other sites.
Most of the horses who are there are Imported top class endurance horses from Australia. I saw pictures last year and was horrified.
I e.mailed FEI as Endurance Chams was being held there and this owner was participating, I also spoke to Malaysian embassy and tourist people as some of these poor creatures were being used for hire by local hotels.
I cant get the second link to work ......
is this the same place?

Could you inform WSPA, PETA, Brooke Hospital and any others working in the area? They might have local influence.

I haven't looked at the links yet - I haven't the stomach for more abused horses at the moment. Very upsetting. If you can draft a letter of protest or petition and I will sign it.

Thanks for your responses.
The FEI has been contacted and have put pressure on authorities - hence the action from the DVS. However we now do not know why there is such a delay here - the horses have not been seized (/rescued) as promised, and we cannot understand why this cruelty is being prolonged and allowed

That is exactly the place LadyJendali - Melingsung Ranch. It's shocking that those reports were made in June 2007.

I think we're working with WSPA already on this, but i will find out from people who know more than me if we have any links with PETA and Brooke Hospital so thanks for that (i'm quite new to this). The photos are very upsetting so understand very much you not wanting to look. Please don't let this tar your image of Malaysia too much - most of us here love and care for our horses, and are disgusted by the way these ones have been treated!

the link should work here, but I should have warned you before that some of these photos will upset you:

Those shetlands were being sold for RM15K each (just over £2000).

about the draft letter/ petition - that would be great if you could sign. I was sent a letter a few weeks ago, but will check if it is still up to date, and suitable to be sent out

thanks again
