Horse neglect woman escapes jail

TARA GREAVES

26 April 2007 14:48

Karen Woods at Norwich Magistrates Court.
A woman with a history of animal cruelty escaped jail today after five horses were found close to starvation at her Norfolk home.

Karen Woods was already banned from keeping dogs when RSPCA inspectors visited her home in September last year and discovered the horses without food and adequate water, as temperatures soared to 26C.

Woods, 49, of The Paddocks, Ashby St Mary, near Loddon, pleaded guilty to five charges of causing unnecessary suffering. Two other charges were dropped.

Jonathan Eales, prosecuting at Norwich Magistrates Court, said Insp Rob Melloy found seven horses kept in a barren paddock, cluttered with barbed wire and other sharp metal objects which the animals had striped of anything nutritious, including bark off the trees.

Mr Eales said the horses were given a condition score of between 0-5, the lowest end of the scale being on the point of death and the other obese. Five of the horses were between 0.5 and 1.5 and two others between 2 - 3, resulting in two charges being dropped.

“Each of the five horses suffered for a period of at least a month,” he said.

Damien Moore, defending, told the court Woods was genuinely very remorseful for what had happened to the horses.

“As a matter of course she would feed all the animals in the stables during the summer months. The problems that transpired were because two of the horses were dominant - the two not subject to these charges - and because of their dominance they would gobble all of the food before the other horses could eat,” he said.

“She accepts that it was her responsibility to resolve the problem.”

He said Woods worked full time and conceded she did not have all the hours she would have liked to deal with the animals, which have been taken in by the International League for the Protection of Horses.

Six of the animals are doing well but one has since had to be put down because of an unrelated issue.

Woods was banned from keeping dogs in October 2005 after two animals were found caged and emaciated at her home.

District Judge Philip Browning commented that he thought there was more media interest in this case than in some of the cruelty humans do to each other, which he felt might be a result of the society we live in.

“It is important to reflect the difference between criminal neglect and deliberate cruelty,” he said, stating that the most serious cases of the latter would carry a prison sentence.

“The aggravating feature of this case is that you do have previous convictions which demonstrate you have shown to be incapable of looking after animals without neglecting them.”

He sentenced her to 12 weeks in prison for each charge to run concurrently, suspended for two years, ordered her to complete 150 hours unpaid work and to comply with a supervision order for two years.

Woods was also told to pay compensation of £3,445 and costs of £250 and was banned from keeping any animals for 10 years.

Speaking after the case, Insp Melloy said: “She escaped prison by the skin of her teeth and that was reflected in what the judge said.

“We prosecuted her in 2005 but less than a year later she reoffended and she obviously hasn't learnt how to care for animals.

“It was immediately obvious that five of the horses were unacceptably thin. It is simply not an excuse to say that two of the horses bullied the rest.”

I am dissapointed that she did not go to prison for what she did there are pictures of the horses on the EDP website and on our local news last night. I could have cried when I saw the conditions. I knew they were bad but..............

Anyway they are safe now, hope to go and see then at ILPH soon.

OMG this is horrendous .
One of these youngsters is a 4yr old by my stallion High Tension.
I had no idea i have been trying to contact her for months now as she has always done my website.
I am just absolutely horrified.
Mortified i dont know whether this filly is alive or dead.

Horsenut please do the horse in question is a 4 yr old bay filly it would be the only one like that the others i think are all chestnut and grey

Banned from keeping animals for 10 years? She should be banned for life!!

Unpaid work? Pah, she should be pulling up ragwort with her bare hands on the edge of the motorway.

Makes my blood boil that the Gov't spent all that money banning hunting when far more cruelty goes on behind closed doors, un punished IMO.

Amymay i have no sound on my computer so cant hear what they say but im not sure if she is the one that was lying down as she would be bright bay .

This is awful- only just seen this Sally. Is this one you bred?
God she has gotten off VERY lightly considering her history. Pathetic legal system...

No - I;ve got no sound either - which is so frustrating.

Keep us posted, would be great if you can get the mare if it is one by your lad.

Right just watched the video again-7 horses were there total 6 horses came back to the ILPH
there are two big bays
One grey
One chestnut
and two young bay yearlings, one plain bay and the one lying down

She said on the video that the two young horses have been turned out with other horses to grow up for a few years- so one of those must be yours

No she is someone i have known for some years as she has always done my website.
To be honest i havnt been there for several years but foaled a mare for her a number of years ago and they all looked in good health then.
Obviously we are in devon now and i havnt seen them for some years though.
She sent the mare here and she stayed for several months as they were short of grass.
An exchange keep for work if you like.
The mother is the chestnut mare at the beginning of the video.
Filly is bright bay .
Im just cant believe it totally shellshocked.
Filly is full TB registered and named on the GSB she would make a really nice young horse for someone if she is ok as pretty well bred.

See from waht i remember .
There was an old grey mare
a young grey mare mother of bay/chestnut 4 yr old
A chestnut gelding son of chestnut mare 7yrs old
A old chestnut mare
A bay filly By HT 4 this time out of chestnut mare
A bay/chestnut filly by above chestnut gelding before he was cut.also 4 this time out of younger grey mare
and an older bay i think some discription not sure .
I think that they just look like yearlings as so backward.
I know the others are all correct not sure of the last one.

Amymay i think i might just do that off to work in a second and Horsenut has kindly tried for me as she is nearer.
But will try in the morning i think.

Me too Amymay....what a wicked and cruel woman, and what a pathetic sentence she was given.

It sounds as though the ILPH have done a great job with the remaining 6 and it was lovely to see the video showing how happy and well they are now compared to last year.

Sally,

I am so sorry for you. I have lived close to this woman for a over 5 years and have been working with the ILPH during this time, reporting when they escaped and on their condition etc.
There were 7 horses, one has been put to sleep but I am not sure which one. They were kept back from the road. Over the last 5 years their condition had got worse.

What infuriates me the most is we live in a very horsey commuity and all she had to do was ask if she needed help....

I really hope that you can speak to the ILPH and see if you can get any info on your filly. I know the ILPH officer involved so if there is anything I can do please PM me.

Hi, I am doing a course at ILPH so got to see all seven when they first came in. The younger grey had to be put down. The rest are all fine and dandy now and couldn't be in a nicer place. In some respects I think the facilites and care they get at ILPH is better than most of us could give our own horses! Sallyf - Give them a ring, I am sure they will be more than happy to give you any info and I am sure they would like any info you have on their breeding etc as theuy will all eventualy be rehomed.

That really is horrific.....both the poor treatment of the horses, and the useless sentence the woman was given

I hope, Sally, that you find good news about the filly

Thanks everyone and particular thanks to Horsenut who has been fantastic.
We will contact ILPH tomorrow and help them out with the breeding and any information we can.
My OH is in the area in a few weeks and will probably try and get to see her as we have ascertained that she is ok.
Everyone on here is just so great.
