That poor horse on the news page. 33 years old and left to die like that. He's given a lifetime of service and that's how he's treated. Appalling. It really is. I know there are often neglect/abuse cases (sadly) but that's truly horrific. She should be locked up.

:( :( :(

I know, it's disgusting! Poor poor horse. My best friends pony is 34 and has every care that she could want, she has given so many people pleasure during her live that she rightly deserves a happy and peaceful retirement. She has many human aunties who love her as well as her mum and my friend only said today that I'm like her godmother. Why do people just give up on horses once they get older, it disgusts me xx

She probably didn't have the courage to make 'that' call. I had to do it for my old mare a couple of years ago and it ain't easy! She isn't the first to let things go too long and won't be the last. It is no way to repay a good friend tho!

One yard I was at years ago had a woman with an absolutely skeletal horse with chronic diarhoea, seriously old and lame. I was horrified she was keeping him going. Unbelievably she had support of her vet!! Eventually he collapsed with a ruptured gut, I had to sit on his flailing body so the vet could put him down! Nasty !

Vets make money out of sick animals!!!!! sadly people sometimes dont do the right thing for all sorts of reasons
I think the welfare of the animal should come first.. peoples emotions and the vets new volvo a distant second ....

I just find this particular case so appalling, the photo of that poor horse is so distressing. And here we are again, a higher species (supposedly) causes suffering to another animal - and if as another poster suggested it was because she maybe couldn't make that call I just find that the worst possible excuse. At any age anyone owes it to a horse to try and make the right decision to not cause any further pain or suffering, to not do it to a horse like that towards the end of their life when it was so obviously apparent that it was failing (and that would have been happening for some time) is just shocking, it's beyond words or understanding.

Horses are a gift to us not a right and that woman whatever her issues with making "that" decision had no right at all to cause suffering to that horse...

It makes me both angry and so very very sad when I saw the picture & read teh text. When we decide to embark upon horse ownership, thinking of the inevitable HAS to come into that decision. IF you feel it's something you couldn't do, then frankly, don't own a horse... And alas it's so true, this isn't the first time it's happened, and it won't be the last. That woman should be ashamed and at her age should have known a great deal better.

Righto, I'll get off my soapbox now.
