If you're buying from a stud/reputable dealer, and looking at a horse that's up for £10k say, is it bad form to try and negotiate the price down a little? I suppose what I'm saying is, is there any point in looking at an £9K horse knowing you can only really afford £8K - £8.5, or are you wasting your time? What's the etiquette?

what's the worst they can do? say no? In which case you can always walk away.

If you're looking at a 9k horse go in with an offer for 8k and a cheeky smile and you may well get it for 8.5 (or less). Always start with a low 'bid'. Studs are much like dealers in that often they'll be prepared to drop the price a little .
