negotiating with sharers..

I pay a fixed amount £30 a week. I think a fixed amount is usual. We have no written agreement, but the arrangement works well for both of us ( I hope!)

How?? Does that include hay/bedding/any chores?

That's almost double what I pay for DIY livery and I'm in one of the most expensive areas of the country.

his stable costs 24 a week, haylege is 17 per week (round bales are brought out whenever needed) and shavings cost 7.50 per bale, as theyve not been getting out much hes been needing 3 shavings every week

do you share the costs of vet bills/shoeing etc? my dad always says im insane for not asking them to pay at least part of these things, i dont think its fair as hes my horse so i should pay for his healthcare and food and shoes etc right?
 
40 pounds a week from sharers!!! That'd cover my entire cost for 1 horse and I'd have some left over! I don't believe its a fair price 63 pounds a week DIY.
I used to pay 30 including stable, bedding and hay. Also if you'd be late she wouldn't mind bringing in!

I reckon from the sharers reply she's read this. :rolleyes:
 
Im a sharer and pay £20 a week for 2 days, if I cant do a day then will just do another day, if any other days are not available then I would get £10 as I missed one day. (this has never happened but its what would happen if I couldnt ride). I think its unfair when people ask sharers to pay for shoes, vet etc, at the end of the day it was your choice to take on a horse so you pay for its up keep!

Also, I dont think you should expect her to pay to cover her days, its your horse!

my YO put prices up as a few liveries left and she said the costs of the shavings she was buying in went up.

my old yard i was paying about 25 a week, but there was 0 company so i moved where i knew people. ive been at my yard for about 8 years and im good friends with YO and couldnt leave her in the lurch

thats what im saying i agree with the fact that sharers shouldnt have to pay for all the extra bits. it was other people that suggested not me!

Wow.

My horse (16hh ISH) is in from around 5pm - 10am most days in winter and goes through one bale of bedding a week (£5.50) and around £12 a week in hay. We don't have any real grazing so he needs the hay too, and he's not a great doer. I'm amazed yours is costing so much.

I don't think that the money was the issue so much for OP, more the time. Would it not be better to look at part livery, or working livery, and perhaps keep one sharer with allocated days, so there's nomore confusion?

No, I don't pay any extra, and we are also in a very expensive area, and a very nice yard.

ive looked into it, but i dont have the balls to actually go. im friends with the YO and ive seen her turn on so many people (inc a member on here) when they leave and id be gutted if that happened, and fox is happy where he is. but i think after tonight and everything everyones said i may have to seriously consider looking at it again.

something clicked in my head there and it suddenly seems like a good idea..
 
As a sharer, I think the done thing is to pay a set price per week, for a set number of days per week, and there are no costs on top of this (cover, vets, farrier, etc) - that's paid directly from the owner.

If I can't do my day, I arrange with the owner to do another day. If it would happen that this isn't possible to swap days (hasn't yet, but then I never really ask to swap, its usually the owner that needs a swap more than me) then I would not get a refund or anything...I suppose I'd just accept I had lost my chance to ride that time. Being a fair person, I would always do the jobs though even if I hadn't ridden.

E.g. If I could only go once this week, instead of twice, I would pay the same as usual but would still do two wheelbarrows of poo picking on the day that I did ride (it's one wheelbarrow per day).

Hope that makes sense and helps with figuring out what other people do!

Thought so, just thought I'd say what I think is the norm in case it helps!

I have changed to set days a couple of months ago (it was done ad-hoc at first) and that really helps to plan my time now. I understand it's hard if shift work is involved but if it's at all possible, I think it's the way forward! Then you just do swaps once in a blue moon when it's actually necessary, like we do!

To be honest the situation seems ridiculously complex. If I had a sharer I'd say Monday and Saturday are you days (for instance) and I would swap if necessary but not regularly and only if it was suitable for me to swap.

Your livery sounds over priced and I'd move and solve most of your problems.
 
When I have been a sharer it was basically like 'rent a horse two days a week' I paid a set amount (about 15 a week) and also did the chores on those days, only at the end of the day I was doing (usually eve). Usually would arrange days at the weekend and was absolutely happy to either schedule around or come down and look after the horse if owner went away for a couple of days, but if I couldn't or didn't want to, it was down to the owner without me having to explain. Also if it snowed or I was too busy one week I would not be expected to pay or worry too much as long as I gave reasonable notice... Usually I'd say 'would you mind, if not I can come down and just feed etc'

Having two sharers is bound to get awkward sometimes, but the responsibility falls with you and unfortunately I think you have to sort out the uncovered days yourself without involving the sharers.

Although maybe you could ask the other sharer if he would like another day for free? I.e. so you don't have to pay someone else!

Bit scared to wade in here but feel I must! I reckon the lazy was sarcastic and she's feeling hard done by. I want to stress that I have not spoken to her at all but but N said she (N) is miserable that they are hardly at the farm together anymore. Maybe she is trying to arrange the days so they can ride together? just a thought, please don't think I'm interfering but I think a lot of aforementioned sharer and she is def not lazy!x
 
ive spoke to her and im just going to see if i can get my shift swapped in work and let her do what she likes this week. going to sit on my next day off and write out set days for everyone and work out a plan for when people cant do whatever days.

got a headache over the whole thing!

i spoke to her about it and she said she didnt want to get the train cos she was being lazy, just want to say i never called her it was her words in the text not mine! i said before how much i value and appreciate her! ive worked it out with her and im trying to sort my shifts around it so her and n have a day this weekend together. its all sorted now anyhoo

Sounds like a good plan. Pen and paper, maybe make like a timetable style thing and scribble over until you figure it out. Also I like making colourful timetables on Excel, but I'm sad like that! :D
