It occured to me that I have never heard my boy whinny. Maybe once when he was about 2 year old, My mare is very vocal and I think that is what has made me notice it more. Is it normal to never hear a neigh? He is otherwise fine.

A few of mine very rarely neigh and some make too much noise ... Jeff has had a hobday so he just wheezes and sometimes I wish that Gray had been hobdayed in his racing days lol!

that's weird, i was just talking about this the other day, mine are really quiet too, even when we go out and see or meet other horses, no squealing or neighing even if other horses are yelling their heads off, mine are all ' whatever ' i get an odd soft whicker now and then but when i see all my friends horses shouting all the time iv'e noted the difference.
awww are mine happy too then?!:D

Ours are very vocal, mine greets me and her friends, as well as giving soft whinnies to other horses. And the others often talk when it's feeding time, or when they want us to hurry up.
Never not had a vocal horse.

One of mine is a complete chatterbox. She's always got something to say, from neighs to nickers. The other almost never says a word. But she's rather expressive in other ways! I've had them both from babies, so just put it down to personality.

My arab mare is very vocal! When I moved yards the transporter commented that he had gone deaf due to her non stop chatter. That's why I find it so odd that my boy is so silent. He does follow me around like a big dog though.

Alf isn't one for neighing, but he's a nostril flutterer. If you watch him carefully, he flutters his nostrils when he's coming across the field to me, when I speak to him, and at dinner time. If I lean forward and speak to him while I'm riding him, he flutters his nostrils. He's an incorrigible old flirt, and I love him for it!

My mare is one to neigh at anything and everything. She's not stressed when doing it, just loves a natter, she will call to any random horse when we are out in a HELLLOooo kind of way, I can imagine her waving like mad whilst doing it! She also neighs at me when I arrive, go to and from hay barn, come back from the loo...

Mine has had a tie forward and makes the most bizarre grunty noises when he's excited. His neigh is hilarious, like a long grown but boy is he vocal. He won't shut up from the moment I set foot on the yard until he has his nose in his breakfast- despite having ad lib hay!

My horse is more like yours, OP. He keeps his thoughts very much to himself. I have only heard him neigh on 3 occasions and I have had him for 13 years. Even at feeding time he doesn't snicker like the other horses.

Winnie talks alot, blows and snorts when riding and is a noisey madam in general. Buzz waffles his nostrils but not much noise, he also taps his foot rather than thumps the door like Winifred!

One of my horses was a very quiet boy and hardly ever neighed. On our yard the mares definitely neigh more than the geldings, except for the youngsters (under 5).

Mine is very talkative, from the softest nostril flutter to a full on indignant "where the hell have you been" shout, with all kinds of wuffles, snorts and grunts in between!

No, not a word, ever. He'll stand really tall with an arched neck and eyeball someone (horse or human) that he wants to come over to him. And if he wants attention or food he'll chuck around anything he can get his chops on until I look at him and then stretches his neck right out and turns his head on one side.

At feed time he does tiny rears in his stable (because it obviously makes the food come quicker).

With all that busyness going on I guess he doesn't have time to neigh.

The only horse I've owned who used to make a noise at me was my TB and that was only a whicker when I brought his feed.
My others have been more spooky types and they are very quiet most of the time anyway

Mine started life like this. Became a tiny bit more vocal as time went on with little whickers now and again. Then I bought a chatterbox and now the first one has found his voice too, I am not sure if it is behaviour learned from the chatterbox or because he might think there is competition for my affections :/ which does make me feel guilty, but he likes having his friend around all the time so I try not to feel too bad for him having to share me. He will never be as noisy though. When there is a proper neigh it sounds like it took quite an effort to make it, sort of like a grunt that builds into a neigh then tapers off into a whicker. I like both of their ways but I do wish the chatterbox would not scream right next to my ear.

Mine only really neighs when she's upset/one of her mates has gone. She will however groan when she's really relaxed, ridden or on the ground :p. That took a lot of time to get used to.
