Went into the field today to work on the electric fences around the perimeter. I had to get into some brambles at one stage and couldn't believe the amount of empty metal cigar boxes! I only have one neighbour and his house backs onto my land so I thought it could only be him. Whilst I was out there he was in his back garden smoking a cigar!

Most of the boxes are very new, although there were some older ones out there too. We're not just talking three of four here - more a bucketful!

Now what you have to bear in mind is this guy really is a nasty piece of work. He has an order against him for holding an air rifle to someone's head and to say he has an agression problem is an understatement!

Me being me, I would just throw them back over and into his garden, but can I then get into trouble for this? Any ideas on how to stop this or anyone I can report it too? It's an offence isn't it to litter?

Makes me really mad as my two little foals are near his house and they are far too young to smoke

Please don't anyone suggest going and speaking to him - he won't answer the door or the phone!

You could call the council? they will inspect the litter then order him to have it removed (he would have to access your land to remove it though) if he doesnt remove it they will fine him and remove it for you, this might not stop the long term problem though?
Could you speak to him while he's in his garden? then he cant ignore you, or you could put a sign up saying dont litter!? or put extra fencing up to stop him throwing his crap over?
He doesnt sound like a very nice neighbour!

Bethyboo this guy really is horrible and always has the Police there as he threatens people.

I think I'll hold back on throwing the rubbish over and will send a letter stating that if it continues then I will make a complaint to the council and also any damage arrising to my stock will be charged for directly to him.

Love the sign idea.................lots of ideas in my head now hee hee

Is it a council house? Otherwise I don't really know what the council would do.

If he's such a nasty piece of work, the simplest option might be just to quietly clear up the tins yourself and put them out in your own rubbish. Just for a quiet life for yourself and no hassle for your foals, you understand. It just sounds like it would be very risky taking this man on...

I agree with Penny. Unfortunately you just never know what someone like that could potentially do to your horses if you complain to him or about him. I know that we shouldn't give in to people like that but when it comes to the horses being so near to him I think you'd be best to clear them up and be done with.

Sounds like a right pain in the rear! Normally I would be inclined to chuck them back over his fence, but if he is psychotic enough to hold an air-gun to someone's head, he is obviously not scared of authority. I would say pick the tins up and dump them. Less fuss and I dread to think what he would use for target practice if he knew you had got the authorities onto him. Its a very sad state of affairs, but sadly people of this calibre seem to be becoming the norm, rather than the exception to the rule...good luck

I would normally, go banging on the door telling him the potenticial (sp) implications of his actions.
But in your case i would just take the rubbish home with me, as you cannot be there all day and you cant have cctv covering your whole field and you just dont know what he will do in retaliation to you reporting him.
Sorry but that is the society we live in and sometimes it is a case of shut up and put up, it is not the nicest option but in the long run it is the safest

I would pick up and dispose of them. Normally back on his garden. However this sounds like a mean bas****. To say I hate people like this is an understatement, but apparently if I were to take a shot gun to him, I would be the one in trouble.

Sooner vermin like this are sorted the better and these folks need dealing like with like, so I would make a few calls to some of my shall we say less polite mates from my bikers days and ask one of them to come with me to ask him not to chuck tins in my field. I would be very polite and hopefully the sight of a 6'6 large biker will give him the hint that if anything no matter what should happen to the horses, the next visit will be by them alone.

Obviously if you don't have "nice" friends, then pick up the tins and get rid of them yourself. The authorities in these cases are about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Maybe it would be best to ignore it for a while - clear it up and don't let it get to you or show him it does. - He probably is just trying to get a rise out of you - why dont you buy him a box of cigars for Xmas as a thanks for being a good neighbour?

Usually I'd say chuck back in his garden

However, if he will hold a gun to someone's head, imagine what he would do to a horse?

Don't letter write, as you'd be better off talking to him face to face. So unless you have oodles of charisma and can sweet talk anyone, perhaps best to let sleeping dogs lie and just pick them up. Very annoying I know!
