I'm in Italy so this is a q for those who have cattle,or the vets...techs etc..
I walk my two ,every day on the cycling paths by my home and cross the countryside, via footpaths ...today there are police notices posted ,instantly banning dogs from using the cycling paths(for hygiene reasons) and fines will be given if you take yr dog on these paths( which run alongside two cattle farms)No other explanation..
There is an official police stamp and an ordinance act number.

I looked up the act numbered, and all is revealed. There has been an outbreak of neosporum caninum which causes abortion in cattle and is spread by dog faeces.
This act was to become effective from August 3 but the notice has only just gone up today.sept 22
I understand that dogs have to eat infected beef ,foetal matter etc to be infected themselves.....is this correct? I've been walking my two twice daily ,alongside these farms....what risk do my dogs run? tHey do not forage, are walked on lead and I pick up after them, but have noticed the cycling path is becoming a dirty walk as many do not collect the poos their dogs produce. They are both young, one nearly 3 yrs and one is 9 months.and healthy,no issues.
One ironic thing is the biggest beef farm has had a female collie cross ,in full season, running loose all this week on the fields and cycling path...I would have thought this dog could well be spreading the disease as she is a farm dog living in with the cows..I am worried about my own dogs and annoyed that the police have not put up any info to educate the public as to what is the reason to ban the dogs( so that they could be convinced to pick up after their dogs, and be aware of the risk that pups and immune suppressed dogs run )
Rant over.

Sorry I am of no help to you whatsoever but just wanted to let you know that this problem is not confined to Italy.

There is a rare breeds farm with some beautiful Longhorn cattle not too far awy from me (W. Yorks) where footpaths run through the fields. The farmer is going frantic because of exactly the same problem that your area has. He would ideally like to close/divert the footpaths. The dog-walkers are livid because he has put notices up about keeping dogs on leads and picking up mess and taking it home.
