Hi my thoroughbred is lame and we've had the vet out who isn't quite sure where the problem lies. He's been put on a weeks box rest and is on danilon but the vet has suggested if box rest doesn't help (don't think it will as its a recurring problem) to have nerve blocks done. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with nerve blocks and if they are any use to finding the problem?

They certainly help to pinpoint the area causing the problem and allow further tests such as xrays and scans to be done to get to a diagnosis, if the horse is lame in trot then the vet will start blocking from the foot upwards until the horse comes sound when trotted up, it can require two days if the lameness is tricky to pinpoint, they cannot do too many blocks on one day as the effect starts to become less clear but normally the vet will have an idea of where the issue is and may get the right place straight away.
