Hi, i fell of a friends horse and broke my humerus into 3 pieces... i had surgery to put in 2 metal plates and had 18 screws.
My arm is healing great and 2 weeks after my operation i was out of my cast and started physio but its been 6 weeks since my operation now and i cant move my wrist hand or fingers at all, cant even hold my wrist up. the back of my hand and little finger has no feeling at all. the surgeon said i have multiple nerve damage and hes given me 5 weeks for it to get better before examining it further and maybe doing surgery to try and fix it.

has anyone experienced this? what chance is there that it wont heal? there hasnt been any improvement at all...

Thanks :)

Maybe get a second opinion as in my experience this is something that needs very early addressing for a good result. However, it is not really possible to generalise especially without specific notes etc. It is not unreasonable to ask questions politely and to get a second opinion if you are concerned. Hope it gets better soon.

Mum has demanded I reply! She had a fall at work and broke her shoulder and arm and also has severe nerve damage. No feeling in two fingers and no strength in her hand. She must have done hers about the same time as you cus its been six weeks or so and she says just keep up with the physio, it's still very early days yet it's going to be a painful slog! Wishing you well x

My boyfriend cut his hand open on razor wire recently. He went to A&E where they stitched it up...2days later it was all pins and needles like for hours so he went back...they said he had severe nerve damage and operated on it 2days after. Surgeon expressed that if it was operated on later than one week from the damage was done chances are he wouldnt get the feeling back. It was his little finger and his wedding ring finger (doesnt need that one anyway!:p)

its about 4weeks now and he has most the feeling back but it does go tingly sometimes.....or so he says! :O) x

ouch :S Does she have to wear a split to hold her wrist up? can she move her fingers at all? x

In my experience nerves never recover....im waiting for an operation to pin my ankle because of nerve damage to my leg.
Having said that,i was told that nerves can regrow, but very slowly

I read that it is quite common to experience nerve damage from my type of break and that 80% of people will fully recover by 3 months. but im nearly at 2 moths and not even a mm improvement... i dont feel i will ever get my hand bac. which is beyond scary :(

Guess i should get a second opinion... since its been 6 weeks and i cant move any of my fingers or wrist at all... I get the pins and needs too... :(

I had an incredibly complex break at the wrist, complete with severe nerve damage. I had surgery, K wires etc etc and had a cast for 3 months! During that time I could not even wriggle my fingers.

I reckon it took about a year to get a full range of movement in it. As for nerve damage, it did improve, but it took time.

2nd opinions never hurt though.

Just remember that the human body is amazing, but does need time!

She's been wearing a sling to keep her arm in place, being the shoulder she's broken they can't plaster it, but i think her wrist wasn't too bad. She couldn't move anything for a few weeks but she's getting there slowly. She has little to no feeling in her little and ring finger and she's now wearing a little plastic splint to keep those two fingers bent which interestingly will make them go straight. She has pins and needles in those fingers tho and can't keep the splint on for long cus of the pain but she's doing better. She still cant move her little finger at all 6 weeks on. They are thinking it will have to be operated on now.

I severed some of my facial nerves in a fall - sensory and motor. It took a long time but I have been able to get back approx 90% of the motor function and maybe 70% of the sensory. It felt like no progress at all at first, but after a year I was pretty much back to normal so do be patient, there is hope!
