Hi
I'm going to a new riding school today, just to try out, and I can't push away nerves! I just really want to impress, and I want it all to work out. I was told that I will be put on a slightly more sedate horse, which is always reassuring, but I'm just so scared! I don't really know why! I'm worried that my nerves will get in the way of my enjoyment of riding and I won't like the new place as much because nerves cloud my judgement!!?
Did you ever feel like this?
Any tips reducing nerves?!
Thanks all :)

It's totally normal to have nerves! Best way to keep them at bay for me, would be not to care to much about how everyone else is seeing me and to just focus on the horse and the instructor. When I started at a new riding school I was totally panicking, but I was put on an old plodder and as soon as I began riding I just forgot about my nerves. Horses are very good at getting you to focus, you'll soon forget the nerves! You'll be fine, just enjoy it! :)

I feel like this all the time...you are not alone lol. I always feel as though Im going to be judged etc and it really knocks my confidence. The best thing I have found is to be honest and explain your confidence issues. Hope it goes well for you....oh..and BREATHE..!!!! :p

I'll have to work on breathing, often do a couple of jumps in school and realise I'm out of oxygen!
Thanks for your posts, keep 'em coming :)

Oh god I'm the queen of nerves. So much so that I dedicated an entire thread to my anxiety over riding my new horse.

The key things I've taken away from the last week is a) it's never as bad as you think it's going to be b) remember to breathe and if it gets really bad just sing or laugh (it's incredibly hard to stay tense if you're laughing) and c) people are less interested in you than you think they are.

I particularly found things easier once I stopped caring what other people think.

Just go out there and enjoy your lesson :)

Oh my I've recently found nerves i never knew existed thanks to my new ex racer. Remember to breathe, i'm terrible for holding my breath in a sticky situation, talk rubbish, sing like others have said (you wont look daft and you cant sing and hold breath at the same time). Also, trust your horse, remember they know what its all about and they will look after you.

You will have a fab time x

Thanks! I'm even more nervous because I'm in a lesson of other people, and I'm worried that I'll be below their level and not be able to do anything!!! Thanks for your replies :)

Look at it another way..

Your a new client to this riding school and for them it's important that they impress YOU not the other way around. If they can give you a good lesson and make you want to come back then that's all that matters to them not your abilities to ride :).

It's much more important to them to have a happy customer who will keep coming back and maybe spread the word.

So just breathe and have a good time :).

If that's the case you'll know you need to move up or down a level accordingly. Don't sweat it, everyone has to start somewhere :)
