Nervous pup ??

Have rescused a 10month old terrier x she is a darling in everyway, loves people!

But is showing that she is a tad nervous of new starngers!

If someone comes to smooth her she backs of a bit and sort of barks a tad (half hearted attempt)!
As soon as they smooth her she is fine, but on initial greeting she is a bit nervous?
Any ideas of how to get her used to it?

My lab is complete opposite he is so bouncy and loves people

I take her out everyday to new enviroments to get her socialsed with new people xx

Smooth her? Do you mean like to give her a wee stroke? I think it is best to let the puppy settle and get used to the person, let her go over and say hello in her own time instead of them going at her as she may find this intimidating?

Go to puppy training classes. Take her up to everyone to say hello and encourage them to stroke her etc.
Our youngest lab that we bred is nervous of the judge in the show ring so we take her to these training classes and get as many people as possible to go over her like a judge.

P.s do the people who stroke her bend over her or go down to her level? Some dogs don't like it when people tower over them and stroke them if that makes sense?

i would only let people stroke her if they are down at her level,it must be very scary being that small and have a stranger tower over you and touch you,i would want to back into a corner too! getting her out with lots of other dogs and people is the best way to socialise her,she will soon learn to interact and join in with everything.good luck and well done you for taking her on,she sounds sweet

She interacts really well with other dogs, no problem there, we are socialsing her as much as possible!
As soon as people come down her level she is ok

She is settling really well here at home, and is coming into her own!

She is a resuce dog, so we are not sure of her previous history and if she has been abused!
But she loves people!! With time and patience im sure she will come around

try giving strangers her fav treat get them to ignore her and when she goes over they give her the treat and fuss, it will make the experience all good for her, when she comes out of her shell a bit start to take away the treats and only reward with fuss.

This is what we do with our boy, he's nervous of new people so we do this and tell them to ignore him until he goes up to them, then give him the treat. Just gives him a bit of confidence around strangers.
