Started watching this with DS yesterday. I would recommend it to ANYONE.

The bit I watched was about service dogs, this charity send their dogs off to Duke University where they run a series of tests to show what the dogs natural abilities are and they train them according to that. Apparently 20% of dogs exhibit ADHD like symptoms and these dogs make great search and rescue dogs but are less suited to being service dogs. If we can apply this sort of science to dog training, why can't we apply it teaching children!

I thought it was fascinating. I use hand signals so much with my dogs as adults and have always started training them the day they come home. Nice to see concrete evidence about how they understand and learn.
Also a reminder to start the whistle training sooner.
Winced at the aerial acrobatics.
Cried at the matching up with their new homes.
Very enjoyable.
@HopOnTrot thank you. I’d never have thought to look for it.

Love it, although I've only seen about 20mins so far! I'm going into my final year of my degree and my dissertation is about animal communication. If I can keep my sh*t together I'm hoping to go on to a PhD in a similar area. The research has taken HUGE leaps forward in the past 20yrs and we are uncovering all sorts. AI is now decoding whale language. We know they talk but don't know yet what they say, we should shortly.

My main interest is companion animals, dogs specifically but I sometimes throw some cat stuff in there to be balanced when I am looking at it from a people pov. I'm an anthropologist, so my angle is either how humans interpret animals or how animal communication could relate to human language acquisition.

We have massively underestimated animals for a very long time, and its going to make for some fairly unsettling conversations when the current work comes to fruition and filters down to the main stream.

And just because I think its gorgeous, did you know if you tell your dog you love them, they get a sudden burst of happy chemicals. So make sure you tell your dogs how much you love them today

Its intersting you say that, its not quite my area, but that is the idea behind an awful lot of animal behaviour research. We use techniques that were developed for children, but then apply what we learn back to children, or should, doesn't always happen sadyly

And it works both ways - I definitely get a boost of happiness when I look in my dog’s eyes and tell her she’s my favourite dog!

Non doggy people would find that weird. I do realise that 🤣

Haven't seen the program but just wanted to wish you luck with your dissertation and hopefully future PhD.
I was a biologist specialised in animal vocal communication and did my PhD on mongooses and what we could learn about human language from their communication system. I worked with anthropologists, linguists and philosophers. It's such a fascinating and sometimes controversial section of science.
I was lucky enough to work with and meet some really interesting people, including some that worked on dogs or used dogs for their research (scientific samples detection dogs), so picked up bits and pieces of great information here and there.
Unfortunately, science got complicated so I'm now in IT. It allowed me to have dogs! And I do tell them I love them every day.

Thank you, I'm too old and broken to hold down a proper job now, so this is a good way to keep myself occupied. I've helped out a little with a slow loris research charity. Slow lorises are the only venomous primate. Sadly our OBE decorated lecturer was let go due to budget cuts and that's that. But shes doing amazing work with them and the local communities in Java. Its the Little Fireface Project for anyone interested. Its the most amazing example of how we can save a species AND have huge benefits for the local community.

I'll take a look at the project some time, it sounds brilliant.
I hope you don't mind me saying that I hope I can still be as motivated and intellectually curious as you when I'm old and broken.

I'll have to watch this show!

Delighted to know my dog loves being told I love her, I tell her multiple times a day and I've been known to snuggle her in the crook of my arm singing songs about what a delight she is.

I am crying my eyes out after watching the film ' Dog' on Channel 4 films.

It's the story of a army man bringing a Malinoi named Lulu across the States for her handlers funeral.

Great story, guarantee to have you in tears, especially the bit where she lie down on the grave....

If you like Malinois, it's a great film.

My old Basset is watching me at the moment wondering why i cry, guess she didn't watch, only snored the whole film !

I works night and didn't sleep much, so that might be why i am crying like this, still it's a very good film.
