Has anyone had any experience of the NS Tranz 16mm diameter Universal Cheeks & Leather Curb Strap? (2 ring gag with leather strap advertised in H&H mag every week)

It says in the blurb that it's good for horses who bear down on the bridle, but that it's not too severe.

I'm looking for a bit for a horse who ordinarily goes all three phases in a snaffle of some sort - which he's okay in, but I just feel needs slightly 'sharper' brakes and turning for the bigger tracks, and faster speeds xc.

I have a friend who uses a loose ring snaffle for everything, but uses that bit for hunting for a bit better brakes etc. She finds it useful

I have one. I use it when I am doing faster work or hacking out with people who aren't always in control. The rest of the time I use a trans loose ring snaffle. Also I have been using Heather's bits from day 1 of starting my pony...5 years ago. I have never had a problem with them, and Heather herself is brilliant to talk to.

I don't use one but have friends who say it's an excellent bit.

W is snaffle mouthed, even hunting but for eventing we use a Neue trans loop ring/wilkie snaffle.

It's great and means we don't have to change the bit between SJ and XC. Just have the reings not in the loops for SJ and put them in the loops for XC.

It is not as severve as the universal and I tink the steering is better.

Thanks for that Thistle, that was the other bit I was considering. Oh no, now I have to decide which one! I am worried that the gag would be a big step up. I love the fact that he goes in a snaffle for everything, and a wilkie doesn't seem so far away from that, if that makes sense.

Thats how we looked at it with W.

The other bit you could consider is a Nueu Schule hanging cheek. W likes that too.

I just love the fact with the wilkie we just swap the reins as she is less forward in the SJ than XC.

Be warned some horses react very badly to a backstrap on a gag. A friends horse bolted and was then sweet as anything once the strap was removed.

I use it for XC and faster hacks or hacking in company to great effect, and it does seem to stop him leaning so much. Don't use the curb, and only have reins in upper ring, never needed any more than that. We have a hanging cheek for the rest of the time and it just gives that wee bit extra over it. Ponio seems to like it too.
