Neue schule bit differences please

I have been advised to try a Neue Schule bit, now on their website I see different types of lozenger bits.

Can you please tell me the difference to the horse from a loose ring to a eggbut.

Also what is the difference in having different diameters for the rings.

Sorry if these are numpty questions.
 
A loose ring is used if the horse tends to hang onto the bit, you can keep the bit moving around more whereas an eggbut is fixed at the rings so if you have a horse that is heavy in the hand and tries to evade your contact by hanging onto the bit then the eggbut would make his job easier and yours harder!
 
I'd add to that, the diameter of the rings won't make that much difference if the bit is a simple snaffle, only if the bit is a gag and then the larger the rings, the more leverage and the harsher the bit. The diameter (16/18mm) of the NS bits actually refers to the diameter of the bit itself, so the 16mm bits are thinner and put more pressure on the bars of the mouth. Some horses like fatter bits, some don't. The Neue Schule website has a nice little printable bit measure which should help you decide which diameter would best suit your horse.
 
There is a page on the website called 'enlightened bitting'....have a read of that, heaps of info.

Ring diameter - the smaller ones are normally bradoons (ie used with a double bridle), larger for a snaffle. Mouthpiece....depends on mouth conformation. A fat tongue will be happier with a slimmer mouthpiece. A good starting point is 16mm which suits most Horses.

As for ring styles, well, it doesn't make a huge amount of difference. Eggbutt is good for a bit shy Horse or one that backs off. Loose ring has more free play and encourages mouthing while discouraging leaning. Full cheek and D ring are like eggbutt but better for steering (!) and the baucher suspends the bit in the mouth.

Personally, I wish they made fulmer cheeks. These are full cheek with loose rings outside....best of both worlds!!
 
I would also suggest you hire one first from shop4bits. I found my horse went no better in it than he did in a £10 lozenge loose ring. Infact he tried to evade it quite a lot.
 
Thanks , yes I was thinking in the night about hiring one first.
Will have a look at that today, maybe the HHO bit bank will have one!
