Ok school horse in myler 02 mouth piece loose ring snaffle dead happy with it. When i go on faster hacks or jump i can hold her in it but end up fighting her which isnt good for my arms or her mouth. So since i bought her ( 7 years ago ) have always swapped her into a ported straight bar pelham. As our schooling has improved she is now completely over bitted in the pelham and i end up with a very bouncy pony not wanting to go forward however i cant find anything else she is happy and responsive with.
Anyone use a Neue schule universal bit with leather curb?? and what sort of horse do you use it on? and does it work?
Think i am going to borrow one from the bit bank and have read all sorts of stuff about them on webpages but as with all these things is nice to know if they work in real life.
thanks in advance

I started with a Myler combination, and now use a NS hanging cheek snaffle (BD legal) as the mouth piece is the same and he likes it. I like it.

I have the NS universal bit for my horse, she has never gone so well!! all my horses are in NS bits and they go so well i have tried other 'normal' bits but they definatly prefer the NS mouthpiece and combination of metals!

the universal bit i use for my TB x welsh! i hack, school and jump in it! she was very forward going in a dutch gag and constantly fought me and evaded the bit, now she is much softer and listens!!
i love this bit!

I use one for fast work on my huge thoroughbred, he is quite strong but also very sensitive (oh the joys) and it works really well, I get an instant reaction without him being a complete drama queen about it. I have just got the exact same mouthpiece in a loose ring for dressage and they really are the bees knees! Also try ringing Neue Schule they advised me with mine!

I use the tranz universal on my TB for xc, dont need the curb though. He too is quite sensitive but becomes strong xc, did try his normal sj bit last time out - never again as he leaned down on it and just ran.

The Universal, as with any bit where the cheek piece is attached above the main bit ring, will put a certain amount of poll pressure to lower the head, the gag action of the rein on the lower ring has a raising effect thereby, I guess, aiming to keep the horses head in the optimum position.

You can use the universal with double reins, that way you can only use the gag rein (bottom one) as and when you need it rather than all the time.

Agree with others, give Heather at Neue Schule a call she is extremely helpful and there is no pressure to buy. Also take a look at her web site especially the pages relating to her book "Enlighten Bitting" it clearly explains the action of the bit and its uses.

If you want to try out the action of the bit without the expense, just put a flash strap on the back of a dutch gag, works just as well. We always did this if a jumping pony got a bit strong at a show! Obviously if it works then buy the neue schule but its a lot of money if it don't work!
