Neue Schule bit

What do people think to Neue Schule bits are they worth the extra money? My youngster has been bitted for about a year but he's never seemed truely comfortable in his bit so the trainer I had out suggested trying different bits. He's had a sweet iron snaffle with lozenge, a straight rubber snaffle and a normal snaffle and a french link snaffle. I've been looking at a Neue Schule Tranz Angled Lozenge Loose Ring Snaffle, just wanted people's opinions if a neue made a difference

I like the NS bits and fussy horses seem happy, but they are expensive and I do find youngsters see, to change their bitting preferences as they get older! You can trial them from the bit bank. My local tack shop in Dorking will let you trial for a small sum (can't honestly remember how much) and takes it off the sale price if you want to buy it.
 
He's late being broken he's rising 7 so I thought he would of made up his mind what he liked by now haha but he's never seemed truely happy with a bit yet. I may have to trail one see what he thinks
 
my boy was very fussy, but he does have a low pallet and a fat tongue! i got a turtle top and i would recommend to any one the bit is warm in his mouth in know time!

first time i put it in i was cleaning tack out side stable and just popped bridle on to see how he would tack to it... 30 mins later after being ingrossed in the cleaning of saddle, he was stood at back eyes shut snoring and bit spider webs of drool from his mouth to floor!!

My new girl had a neule snaffle and I needed extra control so have just brought the http://nsbits.com/product/tranz-angled-lozenge-universal/ 3 weeks ago
 
I've recently tried the Neue Schule bits for my horse who has a really thick tongue and has always been unsettled in his mouth and leant on my hands meaning I've never been able to achieve a consistent contact. Like you I've tried various different bits and then after some of research I tried the Neue Schule Verbindend (second hand and "cheap" on Ebay!) which he went amazingly in to start with, but then after a week was even more resistant than before and obviously uncomfortable. Wary of spending even more money on something that didn't work I contacted the bit bank for advice. They said that the Verbindend is usually the first point of call for the problems I was describing, but seeing as he didn't like it (typical!) they suggested a Neue Schule Turtle Top. I bought one on the months trial and so far he seems to love it and it has almost eliminated the fussing, chomping, leaning and resistance. He is also working amazingly over his back and feels even more powerful than before which is a "side effect" of being comfortable in his mouth that I wasn't expecting. My advice would be to contact the Bit Bank (google Horse Bit Bank and their website should come up) and describe the problems you are having. They will be able to advise you as to what might suit your horse best to get it right the first time without spending a fortune. They also have some great and informative articles on their website which are worth a read. Neue Schule are great (definitely worked for my horse) and a lot of research and product development have gone into their bits, but if you get some advice you might find a solution in another brand which works just as well and costs less!
 
Neue Schule bits are fab and well worth the money. However, I have found that the Cotswold sports versions can be just as good. I have got a tongue saver loose ring snaffle as my horse dentist recommend a NS Verbindend OR Cotswold sport version. Horse is going beautifully in it and it is about half the price. I know that horses love the Salox of the NS bits but it isn't the be all and end all!!! Just thought I'd let you know!!! Obviously if you can get the right NS one on Ebay then that's even better.
 
My mare loved the NS bits and they made a difference to her way of going. The horse I ride now for a friend I didn't notice any difference with stainless steel, NS or sweet iron.
 
I had one for my Anglo that was never settled in his mouth. Low palate and big tongue, he loved the turtle top. Completely changed him. Put my cob in it and boy did he hate the metal it's made of. He stood there trying to get his tongue as far back in his mouth as possible, very uncomfortable. I think overall they're brilliant bits and would happily pay for them again but would prefer if you could chose to have it with plain metal.
 
Interesting replies here. Having never used NS bits before, we hired (from The Horse Bit Shop) a waterford balding gag for a very strong horse, for hunting. Obviously we went a size up as it was a waterford. We did a trial at home first, and although the mare didn't pull at all, she never really seemed happy in it. I have to say though, I was very surprised when I dismounted at the end of the session to see her mouth full of blood, and once the bridle was off, finding two very deep, sore cuts at either side her mouth. They certainly weren't there when we put the bridle on, and she didn't pull once during the whole session. After it had healed over, we tried another size and a half up, but still the same problem. Needless to say we weren't very impressed. Out of curiosity, we tried her in a 'bog standard waterford' balding gag - much happier mare to ride, and no cuts. Also, if you compare/ look at a NS waterford, and then a 'normal' one, the bobbly bits on the NS one as very pointy/ sharp, whereas the normal waterford's bobbly parts are much smoother, which must be more comfortable/ kind for the horse. TBH, I'd of expected that, for the extra money, the NS bit it would of been more comfortable for the horse, than say, a 'normal' bit.

I found the same with an NS Waterford nelson gag - went up a size as suggested and horse hardly pulled all day - I certainly felt as though I hardly picked up the reins. I was delighted at how he went but he also had nasty cuts in the corner of his mouth. And wierdly the NS ones are supposed to be the best as they have a lip shelf next to the ring to accommodate the lips. I agree that a rounded bog standard waterford would be far better.

See I think those 'lip shelves' were the things cutting into her, however her tongue was also quite bruised so maybe not.
 
My friend has a NS bit for her pony, rubbed her mouth. I think as they are softer metal they wear quicker and need more regular checking, particularly if loose ringed.
 
i used a ns verbindend for my gelding and he was very happy in it mostly but then became a bit fiddly in his contact so i switched to the ns turtle top, which has been excellent and i get a much more consistent softer contact. Would recommend them, hiring from the bit bank is a good idea.
 
I use the NS Tranz Angled Baucher on my cob and she loves it. She is a bit resistant to other bits and doesn't accept them nearly as well as this - think lots of dribble! She loves it though and it's made a notable difference in her way of going - less leaning and not nearly as fussy in the contact. Definitely worth the money imo!
 
Love the idea of them but tried 2 and didn't work for us! When I first got my boy he was very chompy - went through a happy mouth in a week. Splashed out on a neue schule with a lozenge - he seemed to hate to lozenge on his tongue and faffed about even more. I swapped to a KS curved plain snaffle and he was far better.

Fast forward 3 years and i wanted something stronger as he was v enthusiastic hunting and getting dangerously hard to apply brakes. Tried the NS waterford as I thought it would be kinder than a usual waterford. Bad choice...the only time I have known his bar to be cut. I felt just awful. Swapped to a 2.5 ring trust flexisoft gag and I had the control and he was happy.

Another lesson since learned is that if they are chomping alot and appear to take offence at the bit, check the saddle. I was sold mine by a good saddler but later realised it was pinching. Being reactive to a contact can mean that collecting is causing discomfort.

I'm sure if I'd gone through the whole NS range i would have found one that worked but not throwing more good money after bad!

I have the waterford elevator for gelding who broncs and it really helps him
I also have the tranz angle universal
a few snaffles



don't know about value for money but my best investment was my geldings as now you can control him better if he tries to bronc
 
I have the NS turtle top for Mr Fuss-pants and it's great. However a friend of mine won't use NS as she finds they split her horses mouths. Definitely worth using on trial terms, I went through several before being happy with the NS TT.
