Neue Schule (sp?) bits

I'm looking for some opinions on NS bits please :)

Are they really worth the money? My flatwork instructor has suggested that I try my boy in one so I spoke to NS yesterday and they have recommended one for him but I'm loathe to spend that sort of money.

Are there any similar brands on the market out there? The one NS recommended to me doesn't look that different to a Myler that I already have (which I don't use on this horse as he's not keen on it) but presumably there must be some difference in the way they act.. the only real difference I can see is that my Myler has a barrel in the middle instead of a lozenge...

I recently got a second hand one for my fussy mare They are Fab she is a different horse with it. I liked it so much I bought another one she loves the taste/feeling she loves the lozenge and instead of fighting me she chews the bit(not the correct term but you knwo what I mean)and is so much more excepting.
I would highly highly recommend my instructor couldnt believe the difference
(if you search ebay you can get cheaper ones)

I've been looking on Ebay but no one is selling the bit NS recommended to be ATM. I will keep an eye out though.

What are they made of? And how do I know what thickness to go for? The girl I spoke to at NS didn't discuss thickness. Horse seems to have a very fat tongue though and a small mouth for such a big horse. He dislikes his current FL as it's quite a "big" bit, if that makes sense...
 
Ring them up again. they are really good.

My mare has a fat tongue and I've got her in 14mm/16 mm bits. Star loves hers and the Verbindend is the only jointed snaffle whic is anywhere near acceptable to her rigorous standards :D

Agree, they are not cheap, but they are an awful lot cheaper than Sprenger KK....
 
They are completely different to a myler - not as thin/sharp, have a joint (or 2 if with a lozenge) and are made of salox which encourages acceptance. Many horses go well in them.
 
i love mine and so does every horse i have ever ridden them in. what is the recommended bit? what about hiring one to see if it is any good?

They recommended a tranz angled lozenge with eggbutt cheeks.

Everyone on Ebay seems to be selling Verbindend (sp) but not this one! Need it in a 5.5 or 5.75 if anyone can help...

NS gave me the number for someone called Gail at Horse Bit Hire. Looking on their website it seems I have to buy it then return it if I don't get on with it, rather than hiring and buying if I'm happy with it.

Thats the one I just bought my mare on ebay at 5.5 sorry lol;)

Its sweet iron I think and means it isnt as cold in their mouth etc have you tried bitbank I think its called they have a website think you pay a small amount then return if you wish.
Im riding rosie in a fulmer bit with a lozenge as she is being schooled at mo.
I know it is pricey but the difference in Rosie was unreal she went from resisting the bit, high head carriage to working on the bit, schooling well, listening/working from subtle aids etc People at yard couldnt believe the difference.:D

Have you tried putting an advert on gumtree etc I also googled the bit and some shops had discounts etc
 
Thanks GG, I will do some googling and general investigation. My flatwork instructor did say every horse she knows who has been put in one of their bits has gone so much better.

Looks like I may have to bite the bullet and buy one! I'm told the resale value is very high on Ebay so it's apparently worth buying new as it will be easy to sell on if I don't get on with it.
 
I must say I started my cob (thickish tongue, not a lot of room in mouth) in a lozenged bradoon (a Shires one) but their biggest size was a 5.5" and I felt it was slightly too small. The only brand I could find in a larger size was Neue Schule so I splashed out on the lozenged bradoon with silver rings (@£36 from memory) and the difference was amazing.
I use the 14mm thickness (is a sort of urban myth IMO that a thinner bit is more *severe* - it all depends on the mouth conformation. On my cob a thicker outhpiece would be more uncomfortable /severe as he has little room in his mouth.
At the risk of turning into an advert, I do think they are worth the money. Though - a friend uses the Neue Schule Waterford Pelham on her SJ and has bought the Cotswold Sport version and has not noticed a difference so.............?

My horse is one of those who seems to be really sensitive to different bits. We had a break in at the yard in the summer and my bridle was stolen, with my bit on. He was going OK in the one he was in but I'd been thinking about trying something new anyway. I've borrowed something from a friend to try but he just doesn't seem to get on with it - he alternates from fussing constantly with it (not mouthing, I do mean really fussing and chomping) or holding on to it so I'm assuming he finds it uncomfortable. I can't ride him in anything other than a version of a French link because he objects so strongly (I tried a Myler, can't remember which, for hunting and he went vertical the minute I picked up the reins) - he even hunts in a snaffle mouthpiece pelham. So, I'm fully expecting that there will be some sort of difference in how he goes in a NS though whether that will be for the better or worse is anyone's guess until I try it!

(He has his teeth done regularly BTW so there is no physical reason for it, he is just very particular about what goes in his mouth - and I am not heavy with my hands! ;) )

I think I'm going to give NS a go as if I buy a CS version then don't like it, I'm stuck with it and I'll have to buy a NS anyway...
 
Try hiring one first from www.thehorsebitshop.co.uk. Thats what i did with my NS. It cost me £7 ish for one month. My horse didn't get on with it though, and she had visibly chewed it (quite badly!! :eek:) but they still took it back! Good luck. :)
 
There's a place you can hire a NS bit from to try it for 21 days. You pay the full price, but if you don't want it, send it back and pay £6.95 for the hire.

I spoke to NS today (their stand at YHL), and they were lovely and very knowledgeable :) :)

When I spoke to NS on Friday they said I should "hire" from Horse Bit Help - if I've read their website correctly I buy the bit and if he doesn't like it, return it minus £6.95 hire fee. So I will probably do that :)

Yes, that's it :). I'm going to try three different ones, and given that I could already start a bit bank of my own(!), I prefer to hire these ones :)
